Groom Sweeps Into the Lead in Dhl Philippine Open

Manila, February 26: Australian Adam Groom displayed his growing potential once again when he took the first round lead in the US$150,000 DHL Philippine Open with a six-under-par 65 today.

The 24-year-old Groom, who represented Australia during his amateur days, was in fine form at Riviera Golf and Country Club as he finished the day two shots clear of Indias Amandeep Johl, who returned a 67.

In his first season in Asia last year, Groom challenged for honours in the Royal Challenge Indian Open before finishing in joint third place. He had to return to Qualifying School in January to earn his playing privileges for the 2004 season.

Qualifying School graduate Jason Moon, a Korean-born Australian, made it a good day for the newcomers on the Asian Tour by shooting a 68 to share third place with Indian star Jeev Milkha Singh.

The home challenge was led by Edwin Estrera and Antonio Lascuna, who carded identical 69s for equal fifth place with Australian duo David Gleeson and Richard Moir, four behind the leader.

Defending champion Rick Gibson carded a 72 while Ria Denise Quiazon, who is the second woman golfer to play alongside the men on the main tour in Asia, struggled to an 84. Local star Frankie Minoza, the Philippine Open champion in 1998, withdrew from the event.
