Ho Tram, Vietnam, December 3: Local star Michael Tran eclipsed illustrious playing partners Darren Clarke and Jeev Milkha Singh in the first round of the US$1.5 million Ho Tram Open with a solid five-under-par 66 on Thursday.
My mum watched me play tournament golf for the first time. She walked 18 holes so I’m proud to play well in front of her. – Michael TranTran fired seven birdies against two bogeys at The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip course to end the day in tied seventh place alongside the likes world number 12 Sergio Garcia while Clarke and Singh, captains for Team Europe and Team Asia respectively in the EurAsia Cup, shot 73 and 70.
After three-putting his opening hole, the 26-year-old Tran bounced back with close range birdies on holes two, four and six as his mother, Le Thi Oanh watched proudly from outside the ropes.
After turning in 32, he added three more birdies and one bogey to trail first day leader Charlie Wi of Korea by four shots. “My mum watched me play tournament golf for the first time. She walked 18 holes so I’m proud to play well in front of her,” smiled Tran.
“Darren and Jeev are great players and I wanted to do as good as them but today I played better so I’m very happy. I three-putted the first hole (for bogey) but hit it close for my three birdies. Those were very good birdies because it was howling.
“I was looking forward to playing with Darren and Jeev. I actually felt comfortable out there. My putting has always been off but if I can get my putter going then I feel I can play well every week,” he added.
Since opening in October 2014, the links-style layout, located two hours southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, has been hailed by many of the world’s leading authorities on golf. In January, GOLF Magazine named it one of the world’s best new courses. In July, the Australian Financial Review called it “as pretty a course as you’ll find on the entire Asian continent.” Last month, it was named the “World’s Best New Course” at the World Golf Awards ceremony in Portugal.
