Manila, January 11: Promising young talent Miguel Tabuena was named the Philippine Sportswriters Association’s (PSA) Athletes of the Year for 2015 alongside boxing champions Donnie Nietes and Nonito Donaire Jr, reported The Standard. The trio, who has enjoyed a great season in 2015 following their respective victories, will receive the prestigious award during the PGA Annual Awards Night presented by MILO and San Miguel Corp, which will be held at the One Esplanade in Pasay City on February 13. This is the first time in three years that multiple athletes are awarded for the coveted title bestowed by the country’s oldest media organization to recognize deserving athletes and teams. This is the fourth time Donaire (2007, 2011, 2012) will be feted with the award, while it will be the first for both Nietes and Tabuena, who capped a solid season by winning his National Open at the Asian Tour’s season finale and notched two other top-10s. “Donaire, Nietes, and Tabuena showcased the strength of the Filipino athletes, following their successes last year. As the country’s sources of pride, all three are truly deserving of the Athlete of the Year honor,” said PSA president Riera Mallari of The Standard. Tabuena edged Scott Barr of Australia by one shot to win his first ever Asian Tour title at the Philippine Open presented by ICTSI. The 22-year-old sank six birdies in the homestretch to emerge victorious at the Luisita Gold and Country Club, where he had previously won on his domestic circuit. Tabuena has received an invitation to tee up at the PGA Tour’s Sony Open in Hawaii this week. Ends.
