5 things we learnt #MaybankChampionship

February 13: The US$3 million Maybank Championship ended on a high note with Fabrizio Zanotti of Paraguay winning the prestigious tournament with an eagle on the last hole. Here are five interesting things we found out on and off the course.

1 The last time someone won an Asian Tour event with an eagle? There were two players who did it in the same year. First was Anirban Lahiri at the 2014 Indonesian Masters and a few months later Bubba Watson won the WGC-HSBC Champions in China when he holed-out from the bunker to force a play-off.

2We’ve seen this before…David Lipsky of the United States might not have won the Maybank Championship but his runner-up result propelled him to the top of the Order of Merit. The last time he won the prestigious trophy was in 2014. Will we see a repeat?

3One tweet later and the Maybank Heart Foundation charity benefits. Scott Hend of Australia donated his golf bag and irons to the charity after saying earlier in the week that he would give his equipment to any spectator if he misses the cut. Bernd Wiesberger had a better idea and said he could donate it to charity. Hend made the cut but was still gracious and donated his equipment to the Maybank Heart Foundation. Everybody wins.

4Anirban Lahiri and Shubhankar Sharma have ties beyond golf. Lahiri’s father, who is a doctor helped deliver Sharma’s sister some years ago! How amazing is that?

5The Lee Westwood and Saujana connection. From 1996 to 1999, Westwood was a Touring professional for Saujana Golf and Country Club. He returned to the club after slightly more than 20 years. The photo says it all.

Ends.
