Perth, Australia, February 13: The leading players from the Asian Tour are ready to serve notice of their talents when the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth tees off at Lake Karrinyup Country Club on Thursday.
A total of 20 Asian Tour champions with over 50 tournament victories accumulated will tee up for the AUD$1.75 million event, which is set to revolutionise tournament golf with its exciting new format.
Moving away from the traditional four-day stroke play format, the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth will combine 54 holes of traditional stroke play across the first three days with an exciting knockout match play format for the fourth and final round.
India’s S.S.P. Chawrasia and Gaganjeet Bhullar, Chinese Taipei’s Chan Shih-chang and Thailand’s Pavit Tangkamolprasert, who all finished in the top-10 of the Order of Merit last season, are ready for the challenge when the event gets underway.
“It’s going to be an interesting format. With the matchplay on Sunday, it’s going to be a quick entry and exit to the finals. I’m really excited and hopeful that I can be in the field by Sunday,” said Bhullar, a seven-time Asian Tour winner, who ended his three-year title drought with victories in Korea and Indonesia last year.
Chawrasia, whose last visit to Australia ended with a tied-22nd placing for India at the World Cup of Golf in November, will be looking to extend his winning record abroad after he clinched his first victory outside of India at the Philippines last year.
“The standard of golf in Asia is rising and we hope to put up a good show wherever we play.” – SSP Chawrasia.
“My win in the Philippines has given me the confidence in knowing that I have the capabilities to win anywhere in the world,” he said.
“The standard of golf in Asia is rising and we hope to put up a good show wherever we play,” added the five-time Asian Tour winner.
Malaysia’s Nicholas Fung, who delivered two half points for Team Asia at the EurAsia Cup last year will also be hoping to emerge as one of the top-24 players who will battle it out over a dramatic final day six-hole shoot-out.
Fung finished in a career high of 12th place on the Asian Tour Order of Merit after enjoying four top-10s last year and is hopeful of another opportunity to earn his maiden breakthrough on the Asian Tour.
“2016 has been a good season for me. While I may not have won a title last year, I remain positive and confident with myself. I’m sure I’ll be a winner one day,” said the Malaysian.
The ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth will also be headlined by Major champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa and Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen who have both emerged victorious at the Lake Karrinyup Country Club before.
The ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth is proudly supported by the West Australian Government via Tourism WA and is tri-sanctioned by the Asian Tour, European Tour and ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia.
About the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth
Headlined by World Number 10 Alex Noren, the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth is set to revolutionise tournament golf. To be played at Lake Karrinyup Country Club from 16-19 February, 2017 and tri-sanctioned by the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, Asian Tour and European Tour, the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth will combine 54 holes of traditional stroke play across the first three days with an exciting knockout match play format for the fourth and final round.
A regular cut will fall after 36 holes before the field is then further reduced to the top-24 players following 54 holes of regulation play, with any ties for 24th place being decided by a play-off. Those remaining players will then earn their places in the six-hole shootout.
Any matches tied after the six holes will be decided in a hole-by-hole play-off.
That player will then progress to the next round of the match play or, in the case of the final match, win the tournament.
The ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth is a revolutionary golf tournament designed to retain the traditions of the game whilst appealing to a broader audience.
