Fiji, August 8: Korean duo Jeunghun Wang and Soomin Lee will lend their star credentials to the Fiji International which gets underway at the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course from August 17 to 20.
Wang, who has won three times on the European Tour and once on the Asian Tour, is looking forward to making his first trip to Fiji for the event which is tri-sanctioned by the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, the European Tour and the Asian Tour.
“I’m really looking forward to playing the Fiji International, I’ve heard fantastic things about the Fijian hospitality and the course looks stunning,” said the 22-year-old Wang, currently ranked 71st on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR).
Wang, who made his second appearance at The Open last month, had enjoyed a breakout season in 2016, winning back-to-back in Morocco and Mauritius to become the record youngest player to win two consecutive events on the European Tour. He secured his third European Tour victory at the Qatar Masters earlier in January.
Lee, also a winner on the European Tour, will join his compatriot in vying for top honours at the A$1.5 million (approximately US$1.14 million) event.
“I am excited to play the Fiji International, being able to play a European Tour event in such a beautiful place is a real bonus,” said Lee.
The tri-sanctioning of the Fiji International by the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, European Tour and Asian Tour is set to raise the interest in the tournament around the world, with Asian stars strategically targeted for the tournament.
“The Fiji International showcases to the world that Fiji is a golf destination just as much as a tropical holiday spot,” said The Honourable Faiyaz Siddiq Koya, the Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism of Fiji.
“With the addition of the Asian Tour to the sanctioning of the Fiji International we wanted to ensure some of the best Asian players in the world were competing.”
“We are delighted to welcome Koreans Jeunghun Wang and Soomin Lee to Fiji; Korea is an emerging tourism market for us.”
Wang and Lee will spearhead the elite field alongside local Fijian hero and three-time Major Champion Vijay Singh as well as six time European Tour Champion Brett Rumford of Australia.
“We’re building an excellent mix of young stars from the European and Asian Tours as well as our players from Australia and New Zealand,” said Gavin Kirkman, CEO of the PGA of Australia.
“We are pleased with the way the field is shaping up and are looking forward to watching another quality edition of the Fiji International.”
