Sentosa, Singapore, September 18: 2016 was a big year for Chinese Taipei’s rising star Chan Shih-Chang.
After securing his Asian Tour card, Chan broke through with his maiden win at the King’s Cup in Thailand followed by another win at the Asia-Pacific Diamond Cup in Japan, which he considers the greatest triumph of his career thus far.
For the 31-year-old golfer, his story is one of resilience and dedication.
The transition from the Asian Development Tour (ADT) to the Asian Tour and the pressure to perform on the biggest stage was immense.
Chan believes the change in his mental game was a dominant factor to his success, proving that golf is truly 90% mental.
“The experience I accumulated on the Asian Tour is invaluable to me” said Chan.
Like most golfers on the ADT, Chan has dreamt of winning on the Asian Tour since he turned professional in 2008.
He established himself as one of the most successful golfers to come out of the Tour’s secondary circuit with a five remarkable ADT wins in the bag.
“The Asian Tour is my starting point and Launchpad. It is undisputedly true that if your intention is to play better golf, then the best thing to do would be to play in more tournaments with stronger fields,” said Chan.
The ADT circuit provided Chan with exactly what he needed, which was a platform to hone his skills and get mentally stronger with controlling his emotions during a game.
“The Asian Tour players are getting stronger and stronger because they are used to adapting very quickly to different conditions”.
The exposure he received from playing and winning on the ADT taught Chan how to perform with ultimate confidence on the big stage.
“It’s more relaxing to play on the Asian Tour…I have many friends here so it feels like home”.
