Sentosa, Singapore, October 4: Gavin Green became the highest-ever ranked Malaysian golfer following his maiden Asian Tour victory at the US$800,000 Mercuries Taiwan Masters last week.
The 23-year-old’s win in Chinese Taipei earned him 14 World Ranking points, which propelled him from World Number 225 to World Number 157.
The previous highest-ranked Malaysian is Iain Steel, after his second-place finish at the 2007 Clariden Leu Singapore Masters. Steel was ranked 191st in the world then.
Green may climb up the World Rankings even further in the upcoming weeks if he maintains his winning form. He has qualified for the US$7 million CIMB Classic (October 12-15) and is likely to qualify for the US$9.5 million WGC-HSBC Champions (October 26-29).
