Star-studded field gathering for Asia’s Major #HSBCChampions

“This is by far the strongest field we will play against for the rest of the year…” Jon Rahm

Shanghai, October 9: World No.5 Jon Rahm, World No.7 Jason Day and 2017 Tour Championship Winner Xander Schauffele have all confirmed their debut in the 2017 WGC-HSBC Champions, taking place October 26 to 29 at the Sheshan International Golf Club, Shanghai.

Many of golf’s leading stars will join defending champion and World No.3 Hideki Matsuyama, and World No.1 and 2013 Champion Dustin Johnson for the final World Golf Championship of the year.

The star-studded field will include the three Olympic medallists, Justin Rose (Gold), Henrik Stenson (Silver), and Matt Kuchar (Bronze), as well as Marc Leishman, winner of the PGA’s BMW Championship earlier this month, Brooks Koepka, 2017 US Open Champion, US Ryder Cup star Patrick Reed, 2013 Masters Champion Adam Scott, and fan favourite and five time Major winner Phil Mickelson.

European stars include 10-time European Tour winner Alex Noren, England’s Paul Casey, World No. 14 Tommy Fleetwood who is currently leading the European Tour’s Race to Dubai, 2010 HSBC Champions winner Francesco Molinari, and five-time European Tour winner Rafael Cabrera Bello.

Spain’s Jon Rahm, who turned professional only last year and won the Farmers Insurance Open in January, has been racing up the world rankings ever since an impressive win at the Irish Open in the summer. Rahm said: “This is by far the strongest field we will play against for the rest of the year and I would love to make a really strong debut in Shanghai. Majors and World Golf Championships are the titles you want to add to your CV and I would love to feature on the leaderboard come Sunday afternoon.”

Phil Mickelson said: “I am delighted to be returning to play in the WGC-HSBC Champions. Having won there in 2007 and 2009, the Sheshan Golf Club is a very special place for me and I would love to be able to make my return to the winning circle there. The fans in China are like nowhere else in the world in terms of their energy and enthusiasm and I cannot wait to return and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the tournament so many refer to as ‘Asia’s Major’.”

Giles Morgan, HSBC Global Head of Sponsorship and Events, said: “Once again the strength of field at the 2017 World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions will be unrivalled in Asia. This year has been a truly exciting one in the world of golf.  We have seen many first-time winners on the PGA and European Tours and at the Majors. It’s also been another stellar year for Chinese golf, with the incredible performance of Li Haotong at The Open and Dou Zecheng becoming the first Chinese player to earn a full PGA Tour card.  At HSBC we are immensely proud of the role we’ve played in growing the game in China and it’s inspiring to see the emergence of Chinese players on the world stage. With such a star-studded field it is shaping up to be a truly exciting instalment of ‘Asia’s Major’.”

About HSBC Golf Sponsorships

HSBC’s global commitment to golf encompasses all levels of the game, from grassroots to elite.

HSBC is a proud patron of The Open Championship and this partnership with The R&A creates a centre of gravity to a global golf portfolio that spans HSBC’s key markets.  In Asia, HSBC has spearheaded the arrival of world class golf events with its flagship WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai and HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore.  The $9.75m WGC-HSBC Champions is renowned as ‘Asia’s Major’ and has made such an impact, that Rory McIlroy describes China as “an unstoppable force in world golf.”  HSBC has been co-title sponsor of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship since 2010 and the event has quickly become one of the biggest events on the European PGA Tour.

However, underpinning those international flagship events is a longer-term ambition to create a legacy from HSBC’s global tournaments through its sponsorship of youth development and grassroots programmes. In China, HSBC supports the HSBC China Junior Golf Program, a sustainable long-term structure and framework upon which the future of Chinese golf is being built. In Hong Kong, HSBC supports the HSBC Hong Kong Junior Golf Programme, a structured pathway for children to try the sport for the first time, develop their skills and, for those talented enough, the chance to represent Hong Kong on the international stage. In the UK, HSBC is sponsor of HSBC Golf Roots – The Golf Foundation’s national development programme, which promotes the sport in schools, helps youngsters into clubs and uses golf to promote important life skills.
