Macao, October 13: A power-packed line-up that features no fewer than 39 Asian Tour winners will tee off at the US$500,000 Macao Open which gets underway at the scenic Macau Golf and Country Club next week.
Title holder Pavit Tangkamolprasert of Thailand will headline the elite field which also includes five Order of Merit champions – Australian Scott Hend, American David Lipsky, Liang Wen-chong of China, India’s Jyoti Randhawa and Thai veteran Thaworn Wiratchant.
New winner Ajeetesh Sandhu of India, Canadian Richard T. Lee, Malaysia’s Nicholas Fung, young Thai talents Phachara Khongwatmai and Poom Saksansin will also be part of the 144-man field from over 27 countries vying for honours in the storied event.
The prestigious Macao Open, which is celebrating its 19th edition in 2017, is also set to welcome back a total of eight past winners, including reigning Merit champion Hend and Zhang Lian-wei of China, who are the only two players to win the event twice in the tournament history.
Rising stars Chikkarangappa S. and Shubhankar Sharma of India, American Johannes Veerman, Thailand’s Panuphol Pittayarat, who are all gunning for a first Asian Tour victory, are also tipped to shine in the full-field Asian Tour event that will take place from October 19-22.
Veerman, who finished in tied-10th position last year, missed out on his maiden Asian Tour title having been pipped to the title by Ajeetesh in Chinese Taipei last week.
The 25-year-old is however optimistic of his chances as he continues his chase for his maiden win on the region’s premier Tour.
“I hope it is just a matter of ‘when’ I will win my first Asian Tour title. Look at Gavin (Green), he is my friend and he finished three times runner-up before he finally won. That just shows you that you have to keep moving forward,” said Veerman, the reigning Asian Development Tour (ADT) Order of Merit champion.
Other players to watch out for include India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar, S.S.P. Chawrasia and Rashid Khan, all multiple winners on the Asian Tour, as well as Thailand’s Rattanon Wannasrichan and Jazz Janewattananond, who have won their maiden titles earlier this season.
The four-day tournament will continue to be jointly organised by Sports Bureau of Macao SAR Government (MSB) and the Golf Association of Macau. It is sanctioned by the Asian Tour, and promoted by IMG.
