#HSBCChampions Rd 1: What they said

Brooks Koepka (Usa) First round  64 (-8)

I thought we played really well. Putted very well. One little hiccup and I three-putted from about, I don’t know, three and a half or four feet. I felt like I started really well. Drove it really well. Any time you’re making putts and you’re keeping it in the fairway, you’re going to shoot good. I had some fun in the water (on the eighth). It was an interesting hole to say the least. It was an awful three iron. I hit it in the water and to be lucky enough to actually get it out, was very fortunate, and then to hit three wood in there to 15 feet and then make the putt, we were laughing. It was almost kind of like destiny to make that putt for how lucky we were that whole hole.

It’s my first time here and my first WGC event. I’m enjoying he opportunity and just trying to play some good golf. I got out today and just got going and enjoying my golf. When I was out of position, I put it back in play and wedged it close and made a putt. I made a couple of good putts today, which obviously helped. I hope to keep that going. Obviously looking back at the last two weeks, I felt like I’ve been trying to maybe step on it a little bit more than I should. I’ve been trying to push for it and obviously it did not coming out the way I wanted to. So I’m taking a different approach this time. I’m just going to enjoy my first WGC event with Dad’s on the bag and sticking to the game plan.

Yes, it’s the way to open the World Golf Championships – seven under, really pleased with the way I’m playing. It’s all about putting. I didn’t hit the ball well. I didn’t bring my A game out today but my putting is fantastic. I holed almost every putt on the greens. My iron play is really sharp at the moment, but today I’m saying I hit a lot of greens but not good as I did the last couple weeks. I just tried to enjoy my game and tried to enjoy this big event in Asia, especially with a lot of top players in the field.

I felt I had a pretty good day. Everything was smooth and I had no bogeys. One of the motivations I got this year is we have the most Chinese golfers participating in this year’s WGC. We have a total seven China golfers here. Yesterday Zhang Xiaoning, the president from the CGA spoke to us and motivate us to do better in this week’s tournament. The WGC-HSBC Champions has been in China for the past 13 years, and with many Chinese golfers participating, anything is possible. So President Zhang advised us to stay relaxed and do our best. I’m sure our China golfers will have a much better performance in the upcoming days. And being a Chinese golfer, we definitely want to win this WGC-HSBC Champions here in China.
