Manila, November 3: A stellar Asian Tour cast, which consists of five Order of Merit champions and over 35 tournament winners, will gather for the popular Resorts World Manila Masters held at the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club next week.
All past winners, Liang Wen-chong of China (2013), Mardan Mamat of Singapore (2014), Thailand’s Natipong Srithong (2015) and India’s S.S.P. Chawrasia (2016) will feature in the US$1 million event from November 9 to 12.
Order of Merit leader Gavin Green of Malaysia, young Thai duo Phachara Khongwatmai and Poom Saksansin, placed seventh and eighth on the current money list, are set to headline the talented 132-man field from over 25 countries in the Manila showpiece.
Fresh from winning a local event on home soil, Mardan, a five-time Asian Tour winner, is looking to continue his good form when he returns to his winning ground. The Singapore veteran emerged triumphant with a wire-to-wire victory at the Resorts World Manila Masters three years ago.
“I like the way I am hitting the ball now. Definitely feeling confident for the Resorts World Manila Masters, after winning at home this week. If I can sink some putts next week, I should be able to play well,” said Mardan, who just turned 50 three days ago.
Filipino legend Frankie Minoza will spearhead the local challenge alongside 2011 Asian Tour Order of Merit champion Juvic Pagunsan, one-time winner Miguel Tabuena and Antonio Lascuna. They will be vying to become the first Filipino to win the prestigious event since it was inaugurated in 2013.
Other notable players include Chinese Taipei’s Chan Shih-chang, Gaganjeet Bhullar of India, Thailand’s Rattanon Wannasrichan, Pavit Tangkamolprasert and Danthai Boonma, as well as Malaysia’s Danny Chia and Nicholas Fung, who came in joint runner-up last year.
The Resorts World Manila Masters will also continue to receive Official World Golf Ranking points with the champion receiving a minimum 14 points, apart from the US$180,000 winner’s cheque.
The fifth edition of the Resorts World Manila Masters will return with a charity initiative to support families affected by an unfortunate incident that occurred in Resorts World Manila (RWM) on June 2.
Organisers said they are committed to support the people affected at Resorts World Manila through the prestigious Asian Tour tournament, which is celebrating its fifth edition as the richest tournament in the Philippines next week.
A fundraising initiative will be undertaken at the tournament where the Asian Tour and its members will be making their contributions to a charity fund set up by Resorts World Manila specially for the dependents of those who were lost.
Proceeds from the fundraising efforts will be channeled to the children and qualified heirs of Resorts World Manila employees and guests affected by the incident.
