Jakarta, November 21: Justin Rose, a 10-time European Tour winner and former U.S. Open champion, will be teeing it up at the Indonesian Masters presented by Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), Bank Mandiri, Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN) and Telkom, organisers revealed today.
The Englishman is currently in blistering form, having won the Turkish Airlines Open seven days after winning the WGC – Champions event in Shanghai in late October. He will be looking to cap off the year in brilliant fashion by adding the Indonesian Masters title to his impressive list of achievements, which includes a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The US$750,000 Indonesian Masters will be played at Royale Jakarta Golf Club from December 14 to 17, 2017 and marks the seventh edition of the nation’s most prestigious golf tournament.
The tournament, being the season-ender on the Asian Tour, will determine the Asian Tour Order of Merit (OOM) champion. The OOM champion will receive an exemption into The Open Championship and the WGC – Mexico Championship. Second-place on the Merit list also gains a berth in the latter event.
The Indonesian Masters is also the third leg of the Panasonic Swing, which is an aggregate points race that spans five events – in Thailand, Malaysia, India, Indonesia, and Japan – where Asian Tour players can earn a share of a lucrative bonus pool.
The winner of the Indonesian Masters will receive a minimum of 20 Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points, greatly enhanced by its status as the flagship event of the Asian Tour. The Indonesian Masters is also the last event of the year on any main Tour worldwide with significant OWGR points; so players will be vying for the all-important end of year top-50 ranking that enables entry into the Majors and other lucrative events.
Furthermore, the Indonesian Masters champion will receive an invitation to play at the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational in 2018. In essence, there is plenty to play for.
“This will be a great way for me to end the year, playing in one of the Asian Tour’s premier events, and playing in Indonesia for the first time. It is an exciting opportunity,” said Rose.
The 37-year-old turned professional in 1998 and rose into the elite ranks in 2007, when he topped the European Tour money-list. One of the highlights of his storied career is undoubtedly his 2013 U.S. Open victory at Merion Golf Club. This year, he narrowly missed out on the Masters Tournament title after losing to Sergio Garcia in sudden-death playoff.
“It has been an incredible year with two victories coming at once and I hope to make it a hat trick of wins in 2017 at the Indonesian Masters,” added Rose, who has represented Europe in four Ryder Cups, winning in 2012 and 2014.
Last Sunday at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, he finished tied for fourth. He was looking set to win the tournament and with that claim the Race to Dubai title but he eventually had to settle for second place on the rankings.
“We will be able to see Justin Rose compete in the Indonesian Masters at the peak of his powers,” said Jimmy Masrin, Founder of the Indonesian Masters and Chairman of the Asian Tour.
“The tournament has a tradition of attracting some of the finest players in the game and so this year will be no exception. Justin is a Major winner and Olympic gold medallist so we are in for a real treat.”
