In the l
atest segment of Asian Tour golf tips, Thailand’s Prom Meesawat tells us how to hit a low punch shot to negotiate branches from a tree that will hinder a normal approach shot.
Picture 1
It is very common for golfers to have their approach shot to the green blocked by overhanging branches of a tree.
The only way to negotiate this shot is to hit a low punch shot below the branches and onto the green.
Picture 2
I would normally pick two clubs more with the aim of hitting a low punch shot.
The position of the golf ball will be more towards my right foot and I will place my weight more on the left foot.
This will help ensure that the ball stays low and you are also using less loft with the iron in hand.

On the backswing, pick up your club in a more upright position so that you’ll come down steeper into the ball at impact
(Picture 4). This action will ensure that the golf shot is kept at a low trajectory to avoid the branches.

On the follow through, keep the clubhead well in control and the finish should point towards the target as well.

As you are using more club, practice this shot at the driving range to judge your distance control.
Happy golfing.
