2013: A season to remember for Fung

January 14: Malaysia’s Nicholas Fung was the toast of the 2013 Asian Development Tour (ADT) season.
He enjoyed an impressive season with a win on home soil at the PGM UMW Templer Park Masters last June, as well as six other top-10s, including three runner-up finishes to claim top spot on the ADT Order of Merit with his season’s haul of US$43,998.
Apart from topping the ADT merit rankings, Fung also secured his 2014 Asian Tour card by breaking into top-60 on the Asian Tour Order of Merit, courtesy of two top-five finishes in Indonesia and the Philippines.
Fung’s success eventually allowed the next best three players on the final ADT rankings-James Bowen of the United States, Iain Steel of Malaysia and Lindsay Renolds of Canada, to be rewarded with playing rights on the region’s premier Tour in 2014.
“The ADT has opened doors for me. I think it is a very good platform for players to progress onto the Asian Tour. I’m happy that I played on the ADT last year as it has helped improved my game a lot,” said the 23-year-old Fung.
“My most satisfying achievement in 2013 would be a tied-second finish at the Indonesia Open. I never thought I could finish so well in an Asian Tour tournament. That really gave me a lot of confidence. Playing in the CIMB Classic has put me in good form till the end of the year too,” added Fung, who is currently 31st on the Asian Tour Order of Merit.
Fung fulfilled his dream of playing in the prestigious CIMB Classic in 2013 last October by virtue of being the highest ranked Malaysian in the world rankings.
The Malaysian was ranked 1428th in the world at the beginning of 2013 before propelling to 411th prior to his entry at the CIMB Classic. He closed the year with a world ranking of 239th after the Thailand Golf Championship last month.
Look out for Fung as he will go head-to-head with region’s finest players at this week’s Asian Tour season-ending King’s Cup Golf Hua Hin.
