St Andrews, Scotland, July 17: Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee gave himself a lifeline by sinking a crucial birdie on the closing 18th hole to stand a chance of making it into the weekend rounds at The Open on Friday.
With the projected cut at the world’s oldest Major expected to be at one-under, the three-time Asian Tour Order of Merit champion was staring at the exit doors as he was even-par through 17 holes in the second round.
Thongchai’s decisive approach shot towards the green on 18 was spot on as he hit it to within inches of the pin, leaving him with an easy tap-in for birdie at St Andrews, the Home of Golf.
“I played solid today but the putts were just not falling. It’s good I managed to birdie the last as I was under pressure knowing I was in danger of missing the cut.
“But overall, I played better than yesterday although the winds were really picking up at some of the holes. I managed to hang in there and hopefully secure my passage through to the weekend,” said Thongchai, who eventually signed for a one-under-par 71.
Like his opening round, Thongchai had a similar score in his front-nine where he ran out in 34 with birdies on holes five and six.
He then bogeyed 11 and 13 and was clearly relieved when he watched his birdie putt drop at the last before he signed for a two-day total of one-under-par 143.
*At time of writing, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, the 2013 Asian Tour Order of Merit champion, is two-over after 12 holes.
Ends.
