#IMGOLF16 Rd 1 What They Said

Gaganjeet Bhullar (Ind) – First Round 66 (-6)

It was a bogey free round and at the end of the day, that’s the target. I’m trying to repeat what I did last week.

In the beginning I was a bit nervous. Coming straight after a victory, your mental aspect is slightly different. You try to go for a par and try not to attack the pins. I putted really well today especially on 12, 13 and 14 (birdies) and those were all from 10 or 15 feet which I holed.

A lot of the flags on the par fours are quite accessible and you can go for the flag. You can fly all the way to the stick and play target golf.

Gunn Charoenkul (Tha) – First Round 66 (-6)

I’m feeling pretty excited to be tied at the top with Gaganjeet. He just came off an injury and won. I think we had the same injury as well (wrist injury). I’m glad that we are both playing well.

I’ve been working really hard on my game. I’ve been working with the Pete Cowen’s team so his team has helped me find some form. I’m getting back to my best health but when I practise a lot I have that tightness in my wrist. I really need to be careful.

I was striking the ball well in the first seven holes but didn’t manage to hole any putts. I birdied the last two holes and that pretty much gives me the confidence going into tomorrow.

Arjun Atwal (Ind) - First Round 67 (-5)

I haven’t been called strong in a long time but thank you for that (laughs). I played well. I was very comfortable with the group I was playing with. I think the combined age between Thaworn (Wiratchant) and Daniel (Chopra) was a 150! We played within ourselves and it was a lot of fun.

Hitting fairways and making putts. If you miss fairways here, you will struggle. It is the same for most courses but this one especially because the greens are small. I have very good doctors and physios so my lower back is manageable.

Lu Wei-chih (Tpe) – First Round 68 (-4)

I am playing with a lot of confidence right now, having won at home last week. I have played this course a couple of times before so I am pretty familiar with it. I hit my driver good today and my second shots weren’t too bad too. My putting was alright although I missed a few birdie chances out there. The greens are fast. Sometimes I hit it too hard and sometimes I hit it too light. Overall, it was still ok.

It was nice playing with Thongchai and Bhullar. Both of them played really well. They hit it very far. It was nice to see but I just stick to my own game out there. I haven’t really celebrated my win yet because I was rushing to get here. I am still very happy with how I performed last week. It was a great confidence boost for me. It makes me feel that I can still bring my career to greater heights. I have come a long way since my surgery so it was really a memorable win for me.

Thongchai Jaidee (Tha) – First Round 68 (-4)

I started very well but the game is on and off. I have good drive and one bad iron shot. I shanked my second shot and it ended up in the bush on the 16th hole. Luckily I made a good up-and-down to save par. That built my confidence.

I’m feeling very tired because I’ve been waking up early and played in a lot of tournaments. I think a four-under is a very good round. It was a nice group because Gaganjeet and Lu won last week. Both of them are playing very consistently.

Danny Masrin (Ina) – First Round 72 (E)

It was a very up-and-down day for me. I made some stupid mistakes out there but I don’t think it is going to affect me going into tomorrow. I have a game plan. I hit the ball pretty well today. Just a couple of mistakes today and if I clean that up tomorrow I will be fine.

I get on tees and some people think they are difficult lines but I know the lines and where to be and where to miss.
