Overseas watch: Tanihara ends Swiss campaign in tied-sixth


Crans Montana, Switzerland, September 10: Japan’s Hideto Tanihara carded a two-under-par 68 to finish in a share of sixth-place alongside China’s Ashun Wu at the Omega European Masters on Sunday.

The 39-year-old Tanihara, currently 24th on the Habitat of Humanity standings, traded four birdies against two bogeys to end his campaign on a ten-under-par 270 total with Wu (70) at the European Tour event held at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.

England’s Matthew Fitzpatrick, a member of the 2018 EurAsia Cup, closed with a 67 to move into play-off against Denmark’s Lucas Bjerregaard where he would successfully defend his title on the first extra hole after draining a 12-footer for birdie.

Thai star Phachara Khongwatmai posted a 64 to finish in tied-8th on a 271 total, marking his second top-10 finish in three weeks.

Malaysia’s Gavin Green, the reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit Champion, battled into contention in the third round after a sparkling 63 but would settle for a tied-12th finish with Korea’s Jeunghun Wang (64), following a 72 in his final round.

Former Asian Tour number one, American David Lipsky, shot a 73 to take tied-35th on 277 while Australia’s Scott Hend (70), Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat (71) and India’s S.S.P. Chawrasia (73) finished in tied-45th place a further two shots back on 279.

Over in Japan, Thailand’s Thanyakorn Khrongpha claimed his breakthrough victory on the Japan Golf Tour Organsiation (JGTO) where he defeated Japan’s Shogo Imahira 2&1 at the ISPS Handa Match play event held at the Hatoyama Country Club.
