Chiba, Japan, April 21: Jason Knutzon of the United States battled through a hip injury to fire a five-under-par 66 to trail the early leader Ryutaro Nagano of Japan by one shot in the on-going first round of the Panasonic Open Golf Championship on Thursday.
Knutzon, a two-time Asian Tour winner but not since 2007, was bogey-free as Nagano continued his fine form at the Chiba Country Club, Umesato course, after posting a third place result in Japan last week.
Wu Ashun of China, a member of Team Asia in the EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM earlier this year, Chapchai Nirat of Thailand, Sanghyun Park of Korea and Hidemasa Hoshino of Japan shared third place on 67s at the 150 million Yen (approximately 1.27 million) event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour.
After enjoying marital bliss early in April, Shiv Kapur fired a 68 to tie in seventh place alongside Thailand’s Panuphol Pittayarat to lie three shots back from the leader.
Despite experiencing some pain midway through the round, the 40-year-old Knutzon remained steadfast as he returned with five birdies in the cold morning conditions.
“I don’t know if it is turning 40 or what but I’ve had it since the start of the year. I’ve been on the physio table a lot. The injury popped up again on my back nine but I was fortunate to hole some putts,” said Knutzon.
“Hopefully the body holds up. I’ve been fighting a few injuries . It is day one so it is hard to get too excited. We were fortunate to tee off around 7am. We played a few holes without the wind but it is starting to blow now so five-under is a good score,” he added.
Chasing for a first career victory, Nagano turned in 32 before registering a hat-trick of birdies starting from the 11th hole to set the early pace.
