February 4: Over 50 young aspiring Malaysian golfers were in for a rare treat as they were given a once in a lifetime opportunity to attend a coaching clinic by Asia’s top golfers Arie Irawan, Shiv Kapur and Danny Chia; held in conjunction with the Maybank Malaysian Open at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club driving range.
The juniors aged between five to 15 years were given pointers by the professional golfers covering various areas such as posture and alignment using their wedges, irons and woods. The junior golf clinic provided young budding golfers a chance to meet and learn from the professional golfers on how to improve their game as well as share experiences on and off the course.
The golfers gave their full attention to the professionals as they spoke about golf, the challenges, competing locally and internationally and answered queries from the junior golfers.
Young Zarith Sofia aged 11, one of the eager golfers at the junior clinic said, “I’m new at this game and it was really good to learn more about golf from such experienced players. Today we learnt the right posture and how to hold a club in the right angle.”
Isaac aged 11 from SJK (C) Yuk Chai who has been an avid golfer since the age of four said that today he learnt how to perfect his swing from renowned national golfer, Chia who also happens to be the young golfer’s idol.
The one hour junior golf clinic has proven to be a success year on year, as the clinic provides the opportunity or both beginner and advanced juniors, while giving the newcomers the additional motivation to pursue golf more diligently and further equipping the advanced juniors with the right knowledge to take their game to the next level.
“This is my first coaching a clinic for the Maybank Malaysian Open and it is good to see so many young Malaysians taking up golf as a passion and a sport. As a professional golfer, I feel the desire to teach and coach the younger Malaysians who are aspiring golfers to pursue their dreams and through clinics such as these, I could do just that,” elaborated Arie.
