Sentosa, September 30: The Asian Tour is looking forward to visiting Australia next February for the Perth International, which will be tri-sanctioned with the PGA Tour of Australasia and European Tour.
The Perth International will take place at Lake Karrinyup Country Club from February 25 to 28, 2016 and offer prize money of A$1.75 million.
Australian Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the event had moved from October to February to help attract the best possible field.
“For the past three years, the Perth International has been held in October, but hosting it earlier in the year means the tournament will now be staged on the back of events in the Middle East and South East Asia, and that will help attract a stronger player field,” Dr Hames said.
“It’s also a great time of year to showcase Western Australia, our fantastic weather and golfing amenities.”
The Minister said the Perth International would be the only golf tournament in Australia to receive tri-sanctioning from the PGA Tour of Australasia, European Tour and Asian Tour. For the first three editions, it was co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and European Tour.
“The added endorsement will further increase the depth of the field and attract players from all three tours,” he said. “The tournament has seen some of the world’s best golfers compete in WA including Dustin Johnson, Victor Dubuisson and golf Major winners Charl Schwartzel, Jason Dufner and Geoff Ogilvy, and we look forward to attracting another exciting line-up of golfing celebrities next year.”
The Perth International is proudly supported by the State Government through Tourism Western Australia. Dr Hames said hosting international sporting events of this caliber was part of the Government’s strategy to grow the value of tourism from the current $8.7 billion to $12 billion by 2020.
“The Perth International provides significant exposure for the State by generating tens of millions of dollars of media coverage across Australia and in key international markets such as China, Indonesia, Germany, the UK and the US,” he said.
“In addition it attracts tens of thousands of spectators, which helps to promote Perth as a vibrant and diverse global city.”
Asian Tour CEO Mike Kerr said: “We are delighted to sanction the Perth International alongside the PGA Tour of Australasia and European Tour. International collaboration between the three international Tours will further help the game grow around the world and our members will be very eager to compete in the Perth International and build greater value and relevance in the tournament, the wonderful host city of Perth and the state of Western Australia throughout the Asian markets. I would like to extend our fullest appreciation to the State Government, PGA Tour of Australasia and European Tour for inviting the Asian Tour to be a partner with this wonderful event which will showcase many of the best golfers from three continents.”
