This week, asiantour.com speaks to Singapore’s Lam Zhiqun who has enjoyed a successful amateur career before he made the great leap of faith by turning professional last year. In this segment, the Singaporean provides an insight into his life as a golfer, his best moment in golf and the ultimate goal in his life.
How would you describe yourself as a golfer?
Serious yet playful. I’m serious when it comes to tournaments and practicing for my tournaments. Playful because being a professional golfer, this job allows me to have more free time and to be able to travel round world. I enjoy the experience.
What is your favourite club in the bag and why?
My putter because that’s where you make the money.
How do you relax away from golf?
Just chat with my family and friends or hang out at the movies back home in Singapore.
What motivated you to turn professional?
I reached all my goals as an amateur and was in contention in a couple of professional events. It seems like the decision was inevitable as it was already made long ago.
What are the three things that you always bring with you when you travel?
iPad, iphone and my sense of humour
Your golf idols when growing up?
Adam Scott and Tiger Woods.
What’s your ultimate goal in golf?
To be the best player I can be.
How has the Asian Tour impacted your career so far?
I think the Asian Tour is different from other Tours. Everyone on the Asian Tour is very friendly. When you come out here, you are made to feel that you’re in very good company.
What has been your best moment in your amateur and professional golf career so far?
Breaking into the top-16 in the world as an amateur, being in contention at the ISPS Handa Singapore Classic in 2011 and coming in second at the ICTSI Orchid Golf Championship on the Asian Development Tour.
