Back 9 With Michael Tran

This week, asiantour.com speaks to Michael Tran who is the only player from Vietnam to play on the Asian Tour. As Vietnam’s lone flag bearer on the region’s elite circuit, Tran opens up about the golf scene in his country, his expectations in his play-for-pay ranks and his calming influence.
How would you describe yourself as a golfer?
I think I’m more of a conservative golfer who prefers to stay patient, opting to be aggressive and attack only when it’s the right time.
What is your favourite club in the bag?
Probably my three-wood right now because I haven’t used a driver for a long time.

How do you relax away from golf?
Staying in the room and watching shows on my laptop.
What motivates you to turn professional?
I like golf and would like to see if I can make a living from it.
What are the 3 things you always bring with you when you travel?
My clubs, ipod and laptop.
How do you feel about being the first professional golfer from Vietnam?
I try not to think about it too much. I try to see myself as everyone else and not one person.
How’s the golf scene like in Vietnam now?
There’re not many kids are picking up golf as there are not many junior programmes around. It’s only growing amongst people who do business.
How did you pick up the game?
I picked it up back in New Zealand when I was 13. I went there for school. I had a game with some friends and it all started from there.
Your ultimate goal in golf?
To win on the Asian Tour.
