May 9: Bae Sang-moon of Korea, a three-time Asian Tour winner, fired an opening six-under-par 66 to lie in third position at The Players Championship on Thursday.
Bae got off to a hot start when he opened with a birdie and eagled the second hole after hitting a 251-yard approach shot to within four feet of the par-five second hole. He added four more birdies with his only dropped shot on the fifth hole.
The Korean, who was three shots from the first day leader Martin Kaymer of Germany, hopes to continue his hot form in the event which is unofficially regarded as the fifth Major in the year.
“I have a lot of confidence and it's getting higher. I think I will have a great round. I did really good with my super start. It was pretty impressive,” said Bae, who played on the Asian Tour from 2007 to 2010.
Thongchai Jaidee, a three-time Asian Tour number one, will need to overcome an opening 73 where he sits in tied 85th position. The Thai will be aiming to make his first cut at the Players Championship in his third attempt.
