Koh Samui, Thailand, June 22: The long-running US$300,000 Queen’s Cup celebrated its seventh consecutive edition on the Asian Tour last week, thanks to the outstanding support of its faithful sponsor, Bangkok Airways.
It was a week to remember especially for the home crowd who got to witness local veteran Prayad Marksaeng lifting the Queen’s Cup trophy for the second time in three years at the challenging Santiburi Samui Country Club.
M.L. Nandhika Varavarn, Vice President of Bangkok Airways, Corporate Communications, hailed the success of the Queen’s Cup, which was held to honour her Majesty Queen Sirikit.
“We want to honour our Queen through the staging of the Queen’s Cup and because golf and tourism are linked, our aim is also to boost tourism on this beautiful island. We hope players will want to bring their families here and enjoy the island after the tournament. The Asian Tour has done a great job in running this event and we are very happy with it.
“We have been sponsoring this event for the past seven years and it has always been very successful. We are happy to see golfers enjoying this tournament and returning to compete this week. This year, we saw a lot of new faces which makes the tournament even more exciting, given the challenging course,” said Nandhika.
Prayad thanked the sponsors for their continuous support after clinching his ninth Asian Tour title last week.
“Without the sponsors, there will be no tournament for us. I would like to thank all the sponsors, especially Bangkok Airways, in making this event a success. It’s always nice to be back here in Koh Samui.
The tournament was very well-run and I am sure the players have enjoyed themselves,” said the 49-year-old Prayad.
Since the event was inaugurated on the Asian Tour in 2009, the tournament has welcomed a host of successful winners namely Thai stalwarts Thaworn Wiratchant, Prayad Marksaeng, Chawalit Plaphol and Chinnarat Phadungsil as well as Tetsuji Hiratsuka of Japan.
