Kalem Richardson (Aus), First Round 63 (-8)
It is a nice feeling to on top the leaderboard. I’ve been up there lately and it is nice to post a good round and give yourself a good opportunity for the rest of the week. I hadn’t played the back nine before today because I was worn out.
I guess when you haven’t played the back nine, you concentrate more because you don’t know where you are going. You really need to rely on the yardage book and good advice from your caddy.
I’ve been hitting it really straight and when you do that, you can’t really do anything wrong. I secured my Asian Tour card last week so I’m going to try and enjoy the week and see what happens. I got no pressure on me now so I’ll just try and finish as high as I can on the Order of Merit. Obviously I want to try to get a win before the season ends.
It is awesome to be leading in front of Padraig Harrington. Birdieing the last (9th hole, 20 foot) is always nice especially when it is to take the outright lead.

I wasn’t really thinking along those terms (when asked if a 64 was his best round this year) but I played nicely and gave myself some good opportunities.
I got off to a quick start, I hit two eight-irons on holes 10 and 11 for four foot birdies and I continued my momentum from there. I could have picked a few spots to make more birdies. I made a nice 15-footer on the seventh hole and it is always nice to hole a nice putt when you are already six-under for the day.
Overall I’m happy with the round. Obviously it is still a long way to go. It was very nice early on and the greens are a little bit softer. When the wind came up after nine holes, it wasn’t really a problem for me because I had a few birdies in the bank at that stage.
I’m surprised how firm the greens were. It is tough if you miss the greens. Hopefully the rain stays away because it will be nice to play on a firm golf course which doesn’t happen very often.
Arjun Atwal (Ind), First Round 67 (-4)
I hit it pretty solid. I’m happy with my score and I have no complaints. I didn’t take advantage of the early start. I didn’t make a birdie after six holes but I stayed patient and tried to hole some putts.
My game is getting better every week. I haven’t played so many weeks in a row since the last two years. Every day I’m learning something new and I’m getting better every week.
It is not like learning about the game but more about learning my personal habits. I haven’t played tournament golf that much so I want to see what I’m doing under pressure and see where my misses are. I’m just trying to manage that. That’s what I’m learning about myself.
Adam Groom (Aus), First Round 67 (-4)
I’m very happy after my start. I triple bogeyed the 11th hole (started from 10th tee) so I’m excited at how I recovered. I tried my best to forget about it. I’ve had some problems this week.
I have an infection on my leg and I’m on antibiotics. I thought it was a spider bite. My leg was all swollen up on Sunday. My leg is red and sore and I was in bed all afternoon yesterday. I took some pain killers today before playing.

It was a shocking start but it was good to forget about it. You normally remember the triple bogeys! My coach Adam Fraser is on my bag this week and it is good to have him on the course with me.
I hit two shots in the water on the 11th hole. I don’t think I’ve shot a seven this year but it is always a good comeback when you can recover like how I did today.
I made 23 putts and I couldn’t miss on the greens. I was basically shutting my eyes out there. It is always great to have a good putting round. If I can get my ball striking up to standard and keep my putting going, then I’ll be right up there on the leaderboard.
The physiotherapist thinks it is a spider bite or either a massive boil which got infected. It is pretty nasty! I got it taped up and I’m antibiotics.
Thanyakon Khrongpha (Tha), First Round 67 (-4)
It was a good day even though I bogeyed the last. I had two eagles. The first came when I holed my shot from the greenside bunker on the first hole. Then I chipped in from 125 yards for my second eagle of the day.
It started to get very windy on my back nine so it was a good effort today. I’m playing with a lot of confidence after the Chiangmai Golf Classic presented by PTT and finishing tied third in Japan last week.
I missed the cut here last year but now I’m playing much better.
