March 9: Scott Barr of Australia and Danny Masrin of Indonesia opened with matching seven-under-par 65s to trail by three shots at the ISPS HANDA New Zealand Open on Thursday.
Barr and Masrin were bogey-free as they shared fourth place behind the leader Ben Campbell of New Zealand who set a new course record with a sparkling 61 at Millbrook Resort.
The 25-year-old Campbell is riding a rich vein of form after finishing tied second at last week’s NZPGA Championship.
After two years of injury woes when he thought he may never play again, Campbell bounced back with nine birdies and an eagle along with one dropped shot to lead the chasing pack.
“It was a very tough two years when I thought I might never play golf again. It’s good to be playing and obviously getting off to a great start like this is always nice,” said Campbell.
Former Asian Tour winner Darren Beck of Australia posted a 66 while Asia’s first Major champion and Asian Tour honorary member Y.E. Yang of Korea was a further two shots back in tied 29th position.
Ends.
