Manila, November 20: Filipino duo Rufino Bayron and Miguel Tabuena charged into contention at the halfway stage of the US$1 million Resorts World Manila Masters on Friday following rounds of six-under-par 66 and 68 respectively.
The 34-year-old Bayron finished strongly with three birdies over his closing four holes at the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club for tied fourth place, one off the lead, while Tabuena, 21, soared with two eagles, the second by holing out from 87 yards on the fairway.
Veteran Antonio Lascuna carded a 69 to lie in a share of 17th place while Angelo Que carded a second straight 71 for tied 45th position.

Bayron, seeking a maiden Asian Tour victory, missed only three greens as he credited a hot putter for his title run.
“I drove the ball really good and my putting, I had some lucky ones that went in from fairly decent range. Holed from about 12 to 15 feet on eight, 10 and 15 which was nice to see. I’m happy with the way I’m swinging the club and hopefully I can continue to play well in the next two rounds,” said Bayron, who holds one victory on the Asian Development Tour (ADT).
“I’ll try my best to win the tournament but I know it will be a tough challenge.”
Rising star Tabuena rolled in a 20-foot putt from off the fringe on the par five 15th hole for eagle before spinning a wedge approach from the fairway on one out to record a stunning eagle two.
“I didn’t see it go in,” smiled Tabuena, whose two-day total of six-under-par 138 left him in a share of 10th position and four strokes behind leaders Hung Chien-yao, Lee Chieh-po and Jbe Kruger.
“Prom (Meesawat) was already on the green and said my shot pitched before the flag before spinning back into the cup.”
Ranked 38th on the Order of Merit, Tabuena has two runner-up finishes on the Asian Tour and was delighted to be in the hunt at home. His record at the previous two Resorts World Manila Masters is nothing to shout about but the power-packed Filipino believes he can contend this weekend.
“I’ve been average here in the past two years. (But) I’m a different golfer now, mentally and physically,” he said.
“I know I have a good chance. I won four local events this year and I won the Order of Merit for the first too. I need luck to go my way.”
Tabuena opened his second round with a double bogey on 10 and dropped another shot on 13 before producing his eagle two holes later when he rifled his three iron approach shot to just off the green. He produced a rousing finish with four birdies over his last six holes.
“It wasn’t a good start but I knew I could shoot low rounds here which I’ve done so in practice. I knew that if I could control my game, I will give myself a chance despite conditions being so windy,” he said.
“I don’t think I’ve had two eagles in one round. It was a bit of a rollercoaster which is not usually how I play. I’m pleased that I’m playing well. I’m driving the ball well which is which is what you need to do around here.”
