July 25: India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar and Rikard Karlberg of Sweden opened with solid five-under-par 67s to sit in tied fourth position at the M2M Russian Open on Thursday.
Bhullar, a five-time Asian Tour winner and a member of Team Asia in the EurAsia Cup, traded six birdies against one bogey to trail Englishman David Horsey by two shots at the Tseleevo Golf and Polo Club.
The talented Indian was delighted with his consistent play after hitting 15 greens in regulation. His round was only marred by a bogey-six on the eighth hole.
“I hit the ball really well. I hit 15 greens in regulation and gave myself a lot of opportunities. I hit the ball close, so I didn’t have to do much scrambling and the birdies were all from about ten to 12 feet,” said Bhullar.
Karlberg, ranked second on the Asian Tour Order of Merit, signed for a blemish free card highlighted by an eagle three on the 15th hole.
“I made some good saves and then holed a great eagle putt on the 15th, so that helped me move up the leaderboard and give me some momentum for the last few holes. I birdied the 17th and I was unlucky not to birdie 18 as well - the putt just lipped out,” Karlberg explained.
Meanwhile Carlos Pigem of Spain and Chinnarat Phadungsil of Thailand shot a 70 and 71 respectively while Baek Seuk-hyun of Korea (74), Arnond Vongvanij of Thailand (74), Poom Saksansin of Thailand (75), Berry Henson of the United States (75), S.S.P. Chowrasia of India (76), Jazz Janewattananond of Thailand (78) and Masahiro Kawamura of Japan (79) struggled to break par.
