Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia, September 25: The name Sargunan Suntharaj may be lost amongst golf fans in Malaysia but the 35-year-old holds the honour of being the first Malaysian caddie to enjoy a victory on European soil.
The experienced bagman tasted success with Asian Tour star David Lipsky at the prestigious Omega European Masters in Switzerland earlier this month, an achievement he described as ‘unbelievable’.
Over the years, several Malaysians caddies have enjoyed major victories on Malaysian soil in Asian Tour co-sanctioned events with Europe but Guna, as he is fondly known amongst his friends, is the first to enjoy a big win abroad.
“It was an unbelievable experience winning with David in Switzerland. To me, Crans Montana is the best place in golf as it’s such a beautiful venue,” said Guna.
He started caddying at the age of 11 at Saujana Golf and Country Club and worked for the late Ali Kadir, one of Malaysia’s leading golfers before passing away, from 1993 to 1999. Guna has also caddied regularly for Australian Marcus Fraser, who is a winner on the Asian Tour and European Tour, but the Aussie is currently sidelined by injury.
Guna hooked up with Lipsky at the end of last season and the partnership has since yielded several top results, including a tied 11th in the Hong Kong Open and second at the Championship in Singapore.
Lipsky’s triumph in Switzerland was simply the icing on the cake as the American is now currently leading the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit.
“It’s a big achievement in my life and I want to thank David for giving me the opportunity to caddie for him. During the play-off in Switzerland, he decided to lay up from the bunker but I knew he could easily get up and down for par as he’s got a great touch around the greens.
“My dream is to get to the British Open and the Masters Tournament one day,” said Guna.
