Sentosa, October 30: Chapchai Nirat leapt up the leaderboard at the US$5 million Barclays Singapore Open on Friday thanks to a hole-in-one at the 239-yard eighth, his second last hole of the second round.
The burly Thai, who won this year’s SAIL Open on the Asian Tour with a world record 32-under-par, holed out with a two iron.
“I thought it was going to be close – it took a nice bounce to the right and went into the hole,” said Chapchai, who carded a 67 for a two-under-par total of 140 at Sentosa Golf Club.
It was the ninth ace on the Asian Tour and the 29th on the European Tour this season.
Chapchai led last year’s Barclays Singapore Open by three shots heading into the final round but carded a 78 to finish joint seventh.
