September 24: Forget weight loss advertisements…Chapchai Nirat is a fine example that losing weight can help improve your golf game, as he showed at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters on Sunday.
The Thai star ended a five-year title drought when he defeated Filipino veteran Antonio Lascuna on the first extra hole at the Seri Selangor Golf Club and credited weight loss for his success.
From 2005 to 2009, Chapchai never finished outside the top-30 on the Order of Merit. His best result was finishing second on the Merit list in 2007 courtesy of winning two Asian Tour titles.
In 2009, he claimed his third Asian Tour victory by establishing the world 72-hole scoring record with a stunning 32-under-par 256 winning total at the SAIL Open in India.
After that victory, Chapchai gained considerable amount of weight which led to numerous problems including issues with his swing.
It was evident that he struggled with his game after finishing 32nd on the 2010 Order of Merit. It was still a good result, but he never won again until 2014. He conceded that he struggled to win as he had to change his swing because of his weight.
“After my last win, I had issues with my swing which related to my body weight of 120kgs. Now, I’m 93, so I can go back to the old swing,” said the 31-year-old Chapchai, who is currently ranked sixth on the Order of Merit.
“I had back problems when I was 120kgs. I had to go for a lot of treatment. But after taking care of my diet and consistently exercising, I’m beginning to feel better and my golf game is in great shape,” smiled Chapchai, who is known among friends as ‘King Kong’.
