Delhi, February 19: S.S.P. Chawrasia continued his impressive form at home by shooting a six-under-par 65 to share the early first round lead with Richard T. Lee of Canada at the Hero Indian Open on Thursday.
The popular Indian won three Asian Tour titles on home soil and is on track to secure another win at the Delhi Golf Club, a venue where he recently won in November.
Playing in the same group as Chawrasia, Lee matched the Indian’s effort of six birdies to tie for the lead at the US$1.5 million event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour for the first time.
Mithun Perera of Sri Lanka, who lost in a three-way play-off to Chawrasia three months, carded a 67 to bounce back from two missed cuts while Thanyakon Khrongpha of Thailand and Scott Barr were a further shot back.

The 36-year-old Chawrasia hopes to build on his opening round efforts as he searches for a first Hero Indian Open victory, an event where he finished second in 2013 and 2006.
“It looked easy but it wasn’t! My putting was good so that’s the key. This is my National Open and all the Indian golfers enjoy playing in this event. I’m not thinking too much on the course, I’m just enjoying myself,” said Chawrasia.
Lee, who posted two top-five results in his last two events, rode on his superb form and learnt a lesson on how to play at the venerable Delhi course by watching Chawrasia.
“I definitely knew what to expect from this golf course. It was great to play with SSP because not many guys have played as well as he has here. He has won twice here and I have to say I learned a lot about managing this course by watching him hit certain shots today,” said Lee.
