Chia and Shaaban Eye Final Day Charge

Kuala Lumpur, October 27: Local hopes Danny Chia and Shaaban Hussin are going to keep things simple as they aim to haul their names from the wrong end of the leaderboard at the CIMB Classic.

Chia and Shaaban, who shot a 73 and 70 respectively in the third round of the US$6.1 million event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and PGA Tour, are hoping for a final round spark to turn their fortunes around.

Chia, an Asian Tour winner, has yet to produce the form which saw him shoot an opening round score of 66 as he struggled on the tricky greens at The Mines Resort and Golf Club.

“I hit a lot of good drives but misjudged my second shots which cost me a lot of strokes. Obviously, I’m still trying to push myself to hole my putts but I didn’t get any luck on the green,” said Chia.

Playing in his second CIMB Classic, Chia, who shot three birdies, three bogeys and one double bogey, is going to take a carefree approach on Sunday with the hope of boosting his position.

“I’m still trying to play my best and recover a decent game. Right now, it isn’t very pretty to be at the bottom of the leaderboard. Hopefully I can make a little bit of a comeback and finish under-par,” added the Malaysian, who totalled one-over-par 214 for 45th position in the 48-man field.

Shaaban, struggling with a shoulder injury, was under-par for the first time this week and will rely on his short game to pull him up the rankings of the CIMB Classic.

“My game was good. I didn’t do many mistakes but I didn’t get much distance on my ball. As long as I can get the ball on the fairway, I feel I have a chance of scoring. My short game was fantastic,” he said.

“My short game has to be really good tomorrow. I try to keep the ball before the green and do my best for an up-and-down. It worked for me and I’ll try to do the same on the final day.”
