Chiangmai, Thailand, March 29: The inaugural Chiangmai Golf Classic presented by PTT will offer the highest Official World Ranking points in Asia this week.

The US$750,000 full field Asian Tour event, which is headlined by Major champions Ernie Els, Y.E. Yang and Michael Campbell will offer 16 points to the winner on Sunday, signalling the growing strength of the Asian Tour.

In 2012, the Asian Tour offered an expected minimum of 2,975 Official World Golf Ranking points to players, which will be used to determine the field for the Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro in 2016.

Many of the leading Asian Tour tournaments offer strong world ranking points. The Thailand Golf Championship in 2012, which attracted a slew of international stars, provided 36 points to the winner and a total of 192 points for the event which was the highest ranking event world-wide, higher than the Nelson Mandela Championship in South Africa and the Australian Open.

The season-ending Iskandar Johor Open also offered 20 world ranking points to the winner and a minimum of 89 points to the field.
