China's Hu eyes strong debut in Macau

Macau, October 15: China’s rising star Hu Mu is reminding himself to trust his new golf swing when he makes his debut at the US$800,000 Venetian Macau Open this week.
The 24-year-old is excited to make his maiden trip to the stunning Macau Golf and Country Club despite missing his last two cuts on the Asian Tour.
With the region’s premier Tour entering the business-end of its season, Hu knows he must protect his current 46th placing on the Order of Merit to secure his full card for the 2014 season.
“Even though I grew up in Shenzhen, this is the first time I’m in Macau. I’m quite excited to be here,” said Hu.

“My game hasn’t been very good lately. I’m still working on a lot of things. I’ve not made a lot of cuts and this week is almost like a fresh start for me. I’ve putted well the entire year. But there’s some new stuff that I’ve worked with (coach) David Leadbetter since the start of the year.
“Sometimes it works well when I’m playing good but my bad weeks are just worse than before. I need more time to digest the new swing thoughts.”
Hu conceded that finishing in the top-60 of the final Order of Merit is playing on his mind, especially after the missed cut in Taipei in recent weeks. He punished himself with longer hours at the driving range to iron out the flaws in his swing.
“I’ve put in a lot of time on the range, beating 300 to 400 balls every day. I hope this week I will have more confidence on my golf swing,” said Hu, who conducted a golf clinic for junior golfers from Macau with local amateur Xiao Jie-yu.
“I’ve been looking at the Order of Merit. It’s been on my mind. I’m going to try to play in as many events as I can. This week will be crucial. I’ve hit some putts on the greens here and I love the greens. I love the way the course has been set up. I want to get my game intact,” he added.
It’s a work in progress. I need to be able to trust it. In the past few weeks, I’ve only been able to trust it for nine holes and I would then go back to my old habits. I’m trying to get my left arm across my body. Before, I got my club too steep going up and have it fall underneath on the downswing. That’s the main thing we’re trying to cure. Trying to get left arm across my body on the backswing is the main thing.
Jointly organised by Macau Sport Development Board of Macau SAR Government (MSDB) and Golf Association of Macau, the tournament is sanctioned by the latter and the Asian Tour, and promoted by IMG. Following a successful foray into the world of golf last year, The Venetian Macao has returned as title sponsor of the event for a second successive year.

Since its inauguration in 1998, the tournament has been graced by the presence of some of the best golfers the world has ever seen, including Lee Westwood, Colin Montgomerie, Nick Faldo, Padraig Harrington, Fred Couples, Ian Woosnam and Mark O’Meara. This year’s event boasts a total prize fund of US$800,000, an increase of 6.7% compared to last year.
