Scott Piercy (Usa) First Round 62 (-10)
Q. So a great round of 62. Did you see that coming into today?
SCOTT PIERCY: You know, last week I hit the ball pretty well and I didn't make any putts. And I got a lot of bad breaks last week and so I felt like my game was in a good spot.
62, you got to get some things to go right for you. I made some putts, finally.
I had a -- I made two really key putts for par and then I chipped one in from being dead.
So got a little lucky, got the putter rolling, and I continued to hit it pretty solid.
Q. What hole did you chip in on?
SCOTT PIERCY: 13 up the hill. I hit it long left there, just dead, short sided, 10 feet below the green. I just hit this flop shot and just right in the hole. So just hit it and rolled right in the hole.
So, total good fortune, good break, and it's nice to see the ball go in the hole.
Q. When you're going low like that, and you've done this before, what's going through your head?
SCOTT PIERCY: You know, today -- I felt pretty good today, even on the range, I just felt very calm. Felt like I warmed up well.
I've been struggling with the putter, not making a whole lot. So I just kind of focused on getting my speed right on the greens and my caddie gave me a few really good reads today and I just kept trying to hit good shot after good shot.
And the putts are going to fall, they're going to fall. So luckily they did.
Q. With the conditions being soft this week, is the putter the key?
SCOTT PIERCY: You know what, you got to drive it in the fairway. You have to hit it good. Because if you don't hit it in the fairway you can't attack the pins.
So, it's kind of a combination. It's really -- if you drive it in the fairway there's a lot of birdie chances. If you don't drive it in the fairway, you're scrambling to hit it in the right spots to be able to just to make pars.
So, it's really a golf course that you can get if you're really playing well, but the golf course is also going to get you if you're not.
So, I happened to miss it in the right spots when I did miss it. And I hit it in a lot of fairways, which really helps.
When you play lift, clean and place, I had my hand on the ball a lot today and so that makes a big difference.
Q. Do you feel like these conditions, with the heat and everything, do they favor a certain type of player mentally or physically?
SCOTT PIERCY: I love the heat. I grew up in Vegas, so I'm used to the heat. Maybe not the humidity like this, but some guys aren't accustomed to it. I love it. So, it's player to player, really.
Q. So your game plan for tomorrow? Anything you're working on?
SCOTT PIERCY: Well, can I shoot 62 tomorrow too? You know, just continue to try to do the same.
Just hit it solid, put it in the fairways, give myself a look at a putt for birdie and I did that well.
I think I only missed three or four greens today. So, if you got 14 chances, you're doing pretty good.
Q. One last question, was there any frustration after the way you played last week coming into this week?
SCOTT PIERCY: Yeah, I was really frustrated, especially being at home. I felt like I played absolute worst I could have played and still finished Top-25. So that's why I still felt like my game was in a good spot.
But, or I should say I scored really terrible last week.
So like I said, the putts didn't go in last week and lo and behold this week. Filled them up pretty good on first day. So, hopefully it continues.
CIMB Classic 2015Hideki Matsuyama (Jpn) First Round 65 (-7)
Q. Just eight birdies, one bogey, you must feel like that's a good round.
HIDEKI MATSUYAMA: I hit my driver really well today and that was really the reason I was able to score well.
Q. Conditions were ideal, hardly a breath of wind out there and the greens were receptive as well, were you able to take advantage of that?
HIDEKI MATSUYAMA: Especially when you have no wind like today and able to put it in hand, it's very enjoyable to play in those conditions.
Q. Is this 7-under round a reflection of how you've played the last few weeks coming to KL?
HIDEKI MATSUYAMA: Yeah, after the Presidents Cup, I didn't hit it real well, but a little by little my game's returning and I feel real good about today's round.
Q. How about the golf course here? A few times now you've come back to play this golf course, do you find that you're getting more acclimatized and more familiar with the course here?
HIDEKI MATSUYAMA: Yeah, no, of course it does. When, this is my third time here and I love playing here and the course is narrow, those tee shots you have to hit the ball well and I think playing the last couple years have helped me prepare for that.
Q. After a day like this, how will you spend the rest of your day? Because there's lots of time left. Do you go back to the driving range to work on something or just take a break completely?
HIDEKI MATSUYAMA: No, in this weather you can't beat yourself up too much, so I'll practice maybe a little bit and then head back to the hotel and rest.
CIMB Classic 2015Cameron Smith (Aus) First Round 66 (-6)
Q. Good round of 66. Sort of caught fire on the back.
CAMERON SMITH: Yeah, it was very dodgy at the start there. Just the swing was out and then just started trusting it on the back nine and made six birdies in a row. And that sort of, that was sort of the round, really.
Q. What was the key to that run of birdies for you?
CAMERON SMITH: Definitely striking the ball a bit better. As I said, the front nine was pretty terrible, so I was lucky to get out of there with even, and then just caught fire on the back.
Q. It's always tough to recover from a tough start. How do you sort of steady the ship and just get a 6-under today?
CAMERON SMITH: I don't know, really. But my caddie Sam just kicking me up the butt and kept telling me to go forward and forget about it and let's do this tough thing. So, yeah.
Q. You played well on this golf course and this event last year, so that sort of helps as well, doesn't it?
CAMERON SMITH: Yeah, it's good to be back here, actually. A lot of good memories here, yeah.
Q. Your finish last year sort of opened up a lot of doors for you to play on the PGA TOUR. So this is really the event which got you going, isn't it?
CAMERON SMITH: Yeah, it is. It's sort of the beginning of the season for me, so, yeah, it was nice to get off to a good one and it did open up a few doors. I ended up having a good year, so it was nice.
Q. The golf course which you obviously like playing on as well.
CAMERON SMITH: Yeah, I love the course. My whole team's here this week, my trainer and my coach, so it's good to have everyone here.
Q. Talk about your best birdies today. Or one that really stood out.
CAMERON SMITH: Geez, I don't know. All of them.
(Laughter.) They're all the same.
Alex Cejka (Ger) – First Round 66 (-6)
Quick Quotes
Q. So, if you could, great start, 6-under to the tournament. How do you feel about your first round?
ALEX CEJKA: I feel good. It's tough on all of us arriving here on Tuesday with the time change and the long trip.
I was a little bit unlucky that yesterday afternoon. I could only play nine holes in the pro-am, so I kind of played the other nine blind, but I hit good shots and made some good putts and I'm very pleased with the round today.
Q. What was the key to your 6-under today?
ALEX CEJKA: I think that I kept it in the fairway. Obviously, with preferred lies. You want to hit it on the fairway. You can wipe the mud off and then you have a nice shot into the green.
CIMB Classic 2015The par-5s, I almost took advantage on every par-5, I think, and just putted well, made a couple 15, 20 footers, that's always nice on these greens. It's a little bit different than what we are normally used to in America, and you know, it was nice to see them go in.
Q. What does that do for your confidence going forward for the next few rounds, knowing that you're off to a good start?
ALEX CEJKA: Confidence. You know, I played well last week already, I had a good start, I'm playing right now the same.
In golf you never know. Every day can be a little bit different. I hope I'm going to hit a lot of fairways tomorrow, a lot of greens, and give me good chances for birdies and hopefully I make some putts.
But I got to be patient. I mean, it's three rounds to go and it's, that's a long way. Luckily, no cut, so yeah, you play a little bit, a little bit more aggressive than normally, especially the first two days, but it's all good right now.
Scott Brown (Usa) First Round 68 (-4)
Q. So to start off, club and yardage?
SCOTT BROWN: 6-iron, it was 186 to the hole, I believe. It was kind of a weird number for me. I was kind of right in between a 6-iron and 7-iron and chose to go 6-iron, took a little off of it and it never left the flag. And then it hit probably 10 feet short and rolled right in.
Q. What was your initial reaction?
SCOTT BROWN: I walked up to that hole. I made like three hole-in-ones in the last two years on TOUR and walking up looking at the card I thought, man, it would be nice to make a hole-in-one and win something. Because the other three I made I got nothing. So that was my thought walking um, I was trying to make a one.
Q. Are you going to drive it home from here?
SCOTT BROWN: Yeah, do you think they will let me do that?
(Laughter.) No. BMW is a big part of South Carolina where I live as well, so it will be pretty cool.
Q. And then how many hole-in-ones is that for your career?
SCOTT BROWN: I think I'm up to eight now. Eight, three on TOUR in the last, or four now on TOUR in the last two years.
Q. Some guys don't even make one.
SCOTT BROWN: I know.
Q. What does that say?
SCOTT BROWN: I got lucky. I got lucky bounces.
Q. This has to be the best one, isn't it?
SCOTT BROWN: Oh, yeah, the prize makes it the best one.
Adam Scott (Aus) First Round 68 (-4)CIMB Classic 2015
Q. Happy?
ADAM SCOTT: I'm always happy, you know that. I played well today, but I could have had a couple better, but it was a good day. I played well and the scoring's great, so it's a start, but I'm going to have to keep it going.
Q. Was the course there for the taking today?
ADAM SCOTT: Pretty much, yeah. I mean it was just perfect out there. No wind.
And greens are rolling good, so you could really make some putts, it was a good chance for scoring.
Q. Did the early bogey slow the momentum down and then the late bogey, too?
ADAM SCOTT: Yeah, it would have been nice to have a clean card today, because to walk out of there with like two shots better would have been a really nice start.
But even though it's there for the scoring, if you get out of position and in the rough around the greens, you can get some pretty tricky lies and you got to play solid. You can't just go out there and have a good score just because it's playing easy. You got to hit good shots.
Q. How is the finger feeling?
ADAM SCOTT: Everything's good. Really good.
Q. There was one question that was asked. He noticed that you're always wearing sunglasses when you play, but not today. Why is that?
ADAM SCOTT: It's too hot. The sweat is just dripping straight into the lens, it's so hot. And the lens is fogging up. You can't even play in sunglasses out there.
Q. Do you feel comfortable playing without it?
ADAM SCOTT: After awhile my eyes adjusted. It was a bit glarey for awhile. But it wasn't too sunny today, so that was good. But it was just too much sweat.
CIMB Classic 2015Anirban Lahiri (Ind) First Round 70 (-2)
Q. Just thoughts on your day for today.
ANIRBAN LAHIRI: Yeah, satisfied with a 70. I think I struggled all day. Never got on a run. Just came out in the morning and didn't start very well. All in all, quite disappointed, actually.
ANIRBAN LAHIRI: The course is playing really gettable. You can see from the scoring that there's a lot of birdies to be made. There's no rough.
The greens are a little softer than they are usually. So, obviously, I feel like I shot a couple over par, honestly, to how the course is playing today specifically with no wind.
But I'm still happy that I at least managed to finish with a birdie, because it was a struggle all day.
Q. Was there anything holding you back today?
ANIRBAN LAHIRI: Not really. I never just got any momentum going. I think this golf course, you have to take advantage of the scoring holes, especially when you get to the front nine.
You want to make three or four early birdies on those first five, six holes, because you can even make eagle, because they're pretty gettable. And I didn't take those chances.
I didn't make too many putts from 10, 15 feet. So a little disappointed, obviously.
Q. Must be nice to be playing with your Presidents Cup teammate?
ANIRBAN LAHIRI: Yeah, Hideki and me are very good friends.
ANIRBAN LAHIRI: Sergio is also a great guy to play with. It was very friendly, lots of chatting on the golf course.
But it was, yeah, I mean, I've gotten through day one, I haven't put myself out of it, but I'm going to need to start making some birdies tomorrow.
Q. Early this week we talked about energy levels. How was the energy levels for you today?
ANIRBAN LAHIRI: It's been good so far. Obviously, I've been nice to myself. I haven't over exerted.
Just played 11 holes or 10 holes yesterday going into today.
So I think a little bit, maybe a shot here or there because I didn't play a full practice round, a bunker shot and a chip there that I could have hit closer. So a little disappointed with that, but I'm not complaining.
Q. Talk us through the last birdie.
ANIRBAN LAHIRI: It was just a really good number for me. With the wind behind, it was just about five yards more than my regular 9-iron, so I just needed to make a good solid swing and get it in the air and let the wind kind of push it for me. One of the better swings I made today.
A lot of my iron shots, I just didn't make very good swings and left myself 20, 25 feet. So it was nice to hit one and in close and make putt there.
Q. How far was it?
ANIRBAN LAHIRI: I don't think it was more than five, six feet, I think.
Danny Chia (Mas) First Round 71 (-1)
Q. Thoughts on the day?
DANNY CHIA: It wasn't really a great ball striking day today. I managed to scramble quite well today. I holed some good putt. Pretty happy with 1-under.
Q. Are you able to put your finger on the ball striking?
DANNY CHIA: Yeah, I would say so. I think that I didn't really focus very well today on most of my shots today, I just, I don't know, it's just like I feel I'm day dreaming on the golf course, I don't know what I'm doing. But as I say, never the less, I scrambled quite well today and I'm very happy to come back with 1-under par.
Q. Were the conditions out there for good low round?
DANNY CHIA: I would say so. I think that if you hit to 10 feet you got a very good reasonable birdie chance. And I wasn't, I just wasn't hitting enough greens today.
Q. What do you think you need to do better tomorrow?
DANNY CHIA: Hit the ball better.
Q. Are you surprised to see 10-under score leading around here on day one?
DANNY CHIA: Not really. I always thought this golf course is always quite a big advantage for guys who hit it quite far. And as I said this week the rough, it wasn't that long, it's going to be a pretty good scoring week here.
