New Delhi, February 20: Australian Brett Rumford, who ended a title drought dating back 2013 on Sunday, has confirmed his participation in the Hero Indian Open next month.
The 39-year-old completed a remarkable return from injury and loss of form with a brilliant win at the inaugural ISPS HANDA World Super Six Perth tournament, edging Thai teenager Phachara Khongwatmai in the final match.
With his sixth European Tour title, Rumford made a huge jump on the Official World Golf Ranking, moving from 274th to 133rd position. He is now looking forward to getting back inside the top-100.
The Hero Indian Open will be held from March 9 to 12 with an enhanced prize purse of US$1.75 million. It will be held at the challenging and picturesque Gary Player layout at the DLF Golf and Country Club. The Hero Indian Open returns to DLF for the first time since 2009.
On Sunday, Rumford beat 17-year-old Thai prodigy Phachara in the tournament which was using a unique format of 54 holes strokeplay and culminating with a final day of match play rounds.
ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth - Round ThreeRumford, who has played in India in the past, had a tough time in 2014 when he missed 14 cuts in 26 starts and made only one top-10. In 2015 he had a surgery to have a section of his small intestine removed after falling ill in South Africa. In 2016 he lost his European Tour card.
An ecstatic Rumford said: “All I can say is it has been a really, really tough week. You’re looking at the last six holes pretty much to win a 72-hole golf tournament. So it comes down to the nitty gritty of that same feeling of trying to win a golf tournament.  But to actually have that from 9am this morning and then finishing up at 5.30pm is a really long day.
“It was a unique challenge in trying to win a golf championship and feeling that same emotions, tension and pressure for six holes in four straight matches.  It’s just great to be back.  It has been a pretty tough road last year and the year before that was even tougher with my surgery.  I only saw my daughters, my twin girls for four weeks in six months, and I sort of completely fell out of love with the game and my direction in life. But it’s really nice to get my Tour card back and I feel I’ve got back my worth back as a golfer again.”
All the top Indians and World No. 25 Rafa Cabrera-Bello will be seen in action at the Hero Indian Open, which is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.
