#DiamondCup - Rd1 What They Said

Osaka, Japan, September 22: Read what players are saying following the opening round of the Asia-Pacific Diamond Cup on Thursday.

Satoshi KODAIRA (JPN) – First Round 64 (-6)

It wasn’t good to finish with a bogey (on the ninth hole). I missed my tee shot. I thought I hit it into the water but it didn’t so I was still able to play. I can’t do much with that bogey.

Overall, I felt very calm throughout the round. I missed a few tee shots but I made good recoveries out there. I hit it really good on all my birdie holes today. My approach shots were good and I made some good saves.

I spent quite some time practising putting last week. I guess that made me feel better when I address the ball now. I practised till late at night for almost the whole week.

I feel like my game is improving so I just have to keep trying. I like this type of golf course, especially the greens here. My aim for this week is to keep top position and play well on Sunday back nine.

Shugo IMAHIRA (JPN) – First Round 65 (-5)

I concentrated on my tee shots today. I tried not to swing hard. Greens are soft so I knew I can stop the ball with long irons as long as I keep the ball on the fairways. I didn’t start well. I bogeyed the first two holes form 10 but I bounced back strongly with a back-nine 29. It was my best nine-hole score ever. My last best was 30.

Looking at the way I am playing this year, I think I will have the chance to win someday. I try not to rush. I am very interested to play outside of Japan. I don’t have much experience outside Japan. If I can, I would like to take the challenge. I just try to shoot under par 2more days, then I will be in good position to capture the win.

Thitiphun CHUAYPRAKONG (THA) – First Round 66 (-4)

I had a superb start today, making five birdies in my first six holes. I hit the ball so good today. I gained a lot of confidence from there. It got really tough when it started raining on the seventh hole. I think that was the toughest condition I have ever played in. I tried to stay patient and just stick to my game plan. I just keep trying out there. This is a very tough course. The greens are tricky here. You need to hit good tee shots to play well here. I am glad I did today. I made the putt from about seven yards on the first hole. That got my momentum going.

Juvic PAGUNSAN (PHI) – First Round 66 (-4)

I putted really well. That was the key for me. I think if you can get the distance today, you should be able to score. I just played my own game and I think I got lucky at some points. I have played this course before so I have a game plan. I stuck to it today and happy to get off to a good start. You have to keep hitting it good and keeping the ball on the fairways to score out there. I had a long birdie putt from 15 feet on the par-three 12. That was the highlight for me.

Phachara KHONGWATMAI (THA) – First Round 66 (-4)

I hit my driver and irons good today. I putted well too. Everything was good. I made some long putts for birdies as well. It was really tough out there given the rainy conditions but I think I played my best golf. It wasn’t really windy but we got a lot of rain. I cannot complain with a 66.

I stayed patient out there. I didn’t think too much. I just play my own game. I will try my best again tomorrow. My main target right now is to break into top-60 on the Order of Merit. I am ranked 69th right now. Hopefully I can cap a good result this week.

Adam BLAND (AUS) – First Round 66 (-4)

I hit it close for a few easy birdies at the start. I made three birdies in a row. It was good from the start. It’s a great golf course. It’s long. The rain kind of made it harder but it’s still a good and challenging course. It’s my first time here.

I sank a 15-footer on the first and that kind of gave me the momentum. I was just hitting it close out there. I was just trying to make as many birdies as I can. There are still three more days to go. We will see. You have to hit the ball on the fairways and take advantage of the holes where you got shorter clubs.

I will just try and play the same tomorrow. It will be nice if I can keep it consistent.

Masahiro Kawamura of Japan Masahiro Kawamura of Japan

Masahiro KAWAMURA (JPN) – First Round 68 (-2)

My tee shots were really good today but my second shots and my putting were not as good. I missed some short putts out there but I am happy that I only make one bogey today. It was still a good round. I have a lot of good memories coming back here, having won here in 2013. That is a motivation for me to play well again this week. I will try my best.

My best hole today was the birdie on sixth which was my back nine. I made a downhill putt from about five to six metres. Tee shots are very important on this course. I am happy I drove the ball well. I only missed two fairways today.
