September 30: Ernie Els, the Asian Tour’s International Ambassador and Honorary Member, is prepared to keep fighting for Major victories which continues to drive him in the game. Captaining the International Team in the Presidents Cup is also another goal of his.

The South African star said: “I’m not done yet! [laughs]. I still have goals and my love of competition is very much alive and kicking. Majors are what continue to drive me and while it’s true to say that it gets harder to win as you get older, I still believe I have the game to hold my own against these young guns and win on Tour.

“Beyond that I would love to captain the International team in the Presidents Cup; that would be a great thrill.”

A four-time Major winner, Els, who was speaking ahead of the launch of The Els Club Desaru Coast in Malaysia recently, said he holds fond memories of his time in Asia.

“I’ve visited so many great places across Asia and have met so many wonderful people in my travels here over the past 25 years. People have always been so welcoming to me and the hospitality just makes you feel right at home,” said Els.

“Honestly, this region has a special place in my heart and I’m proud to represent the Asian Tour as its international ambassador. Obviously the growth in the game of golf since I first started coming here has been incredible and it’s been fun for me to witness that.

“There is a real passion for the game of golf right across Asia and for us players it’s inspiring to experience that whenever we come and compete here. My view is the game can only go from strength to strength. From an Ernie Els Design perspective, we’re proud to play our part.”

He said his latest course design, which he collaborated with another Asian Tour honorary member Vijay Singh, was fulfilling.

“It certainly has the makings of one of South-East Asia’s top destinations. You have a great location, in close proximity to so many major Asian hubs. You have a corner of coastline that simply takes your breath away and an ownership group dedicated to creating some of the finest tourism attractions in the world. When you add these ingredients together, you have the makings of something very special.”
