Singapore, December 11: Niall Turner of Ireland successfully secured his playing rights for the 2015 Asian Tour season after finishing third on the final Asian Development Tour (ADT) Order of Merit with a season’s haul of US$46,218, thanks to one victory and five top-10s.
The tall Irishman, who was an avid tennis player before turning his attention to golf, made his Asian Tour debut in 2011 and finished third at the Handa Faldo Cambodian Classic in 2012. However, he failed to retain his Asian Tour card after finishing outside of top-60 on the Merit rankings.
In 2014, Turner switched his focus to the ADT, which was inaugurated in 2010 as a gateway to the premier Asian Tour, and secured his breakthrough victory at the Linc Group Jakarta Classic in July.
The victory was exceptionally sweet for Turner as he had been struggling with a hip injury in the last three years.
“I really needed this win. It has been quite grim in the last few years because I had a bad hip injury since 2011. That was the only thing holding me back. I was born with a defect in my hip and had to go through some surgery. My hip feels great now although I had to make slight changes in my swing.
“Winning a tournament really gives you the confidence. It feels fantastic. I really want to get back on the Asian Tour and I’m glad I’ve got the chance now,” said Turner, who moved up 536 spots to his current ranking of 432nd on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) courtesy of his successful exploits on the burgeoning Tour.
Since its inauguration in 2010, the ADT has grown from five events in the first year to 21 tournaments in 2014. The ADT has announced a provisional 2015 schedule of a minimum 17 tournaments with several more to be announced in due course.
