Getting A Round with Arnond Vongvanij

July 12: Arnond Vongvanij of Thailand won his first Asian Tour title at the 2012 King’s Cup in Thailand. He is immensely talented and is highly regarded as one of the up-coming stars on the Asian Tour. In this new segment, Arnond talks about his ultimate goal in golf, what keeps him in good physical shape and his motivation to excel.
1. What psyches you up especially when you’re in contention?
The fact that I want to win!
2. What goes through your mind when you step up to the tee for every round?
Nothing in particular, I just tell myself to play well.
3. Have you ever been overwhelmed by any occasion on the golf course?
When my dad was there when I won the 2012 King’s Cup.
4. What gives you an edge over your fellow rivals on the course?
My patience and putting.
5. What do you do to keep yourself in tip-top physical shape?
I have a workout regime where I go to a gym three or four times a week.
6. After a 65, would you get back to the range or take the rest of the day off?
Most likely take a rest!
7. How about after a 78?
I’ll work on whatever aspect of my game which I didn’t do well.
8. What motivates you to excel?
I want to play well and win.
9. What do you dislike the most on the golf course?
Bad weather.
10. Describe yourself in one sentence?
I like to play golf and I’m fairly easy going. Once people get to know me they will know that I’m easy to talk to.
11. What’s been your happiest moment on the golf course?
After I made my last putt at the 2012 King’s Cup in Thailand.
12. How about the most embarrassing moment?
I’ve never felt embarrassed on the golf course.
13. Tell us one thing about you that not many people know?
I was born in Hawaii.
14. Tell us about your first ever full 18 holes and what did you shoot?
I played my first 18 holes when I was about 10 years old so I don’t remember what I shot!
15. How long did it take you to get to single handicap?
About a year or two.
16. Would you prefer to play on a 7,700 yard golf course or a shorter but penal golf course, why?
I would like to play on a shorter but penal golf course because I’m not a very long hitter.
17. If you were not a golfer, what would you be?
I would help out with my family business.
18. What is your ultimate goal in golf?
To get on the US PGA Tour and win a Major one day.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Arnond enjoyed a great rookie season in 2012, first earning his card through Qualifying School and then finishing the year strongly with a maiden victory at the King’s Cup where he outplayed Mardan Mamat and Thaworn Wiratchant. Enjoyed four other-top-10s. He was born in Hawaii but grew up in Thailand. He moved to Florida at the age of 12 to refine his game at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Graduated from the University of Florida with a finance degree. Rates Thongchai Jaidee as his role model.
PERSONAL: He is nicknamed “Bank” because he was born the night after his mother took her final examinations for her Masters degree in financial banking.
