Daniel Im (Usa) – First Round 65 (-7)
Must be nice to shoot seven-under on what is a tricky course?
This is my first time so I haven’t seen the bad stuff yet. It went well for me this morning. I chipped it in on my first hole and I made birdie on my second hole. I kept going and told myself to keep it on the fairway.
It must be special not to have bogeys out here?
There were a couple of times where I almost walked away with a bogey but I made up-and-down. I was just cool. I’ve heard about this golf course so many times prior to this trip. I came in with a bit of respect. I showed some respect and got some respect back.
The course offers a different challenge?
I’ve played a lot of golf beginning of this year in South Africa. The courses were way different from South African courses. I like this area where you need to keep it straight and hit good iron shots to have good birdie putts.
Are you feeling good about your game?
I’m a pretty laid back guy. I don’t try and hoorah from two months ago. I came in with respect and everything worked out well.
Are you more matured as a player now?
I’m definitely more matured from four years ago. A bit of experience helps. I had a chance to play on the European Tour a couple of years ago. I knew what I had to do to get my game going and scoring going.

Another good start?
It is another week where I start well again. Everyone knows this golf course is difficult. I hit a lot of good second shots and put myself in a good position. My second shots were very sharp today.
How does this week compare to last week?
I didn’t carry my driver this week and last week you can bomb the course. You need to be patient here and hit your mid irons good. You can hit your driver but if you miss the fairway, you can lose two or three shots.
How was the course?
Every shot I play I try to put it on the fairway. When the wind picks up in the afternoon, it will be very difficult especially on the back nine.
How was it like playing in the same group as Chawrasia?
It looks very easy for S.S.P. I just followed him and try to make birdie like him.
Jorge Campillo (ESP) – First Round 66 (-6)
Reflect on the first round?
I am pretty happy. It’s a tough golf course and I managed to keep it play off the tee. It was just a good solid round of golf. I just left it short there on the last, and did the same on the par five 14th so it could have been a little better but overall it’s a good score.
Does this course suit you?
I think when you are playing well then every course suits you. I am playing with confidence and if I can keep hitting my two iron the way I did today then I will be right up there on the leaderboard. I have been playing well recently so I am really looking forward to the next three day and trying to get into contention.
Nacho Elvira (ESP) – First Round 66 (-6)
Satisfied?
I am very satisfied. Last year when I came here I struggled so to come back and shoot 66 around this course makes me happy. I think I learned a lot from last year and having my caddie helped a lot too. I used the driver twice today and that was one too many. The important thing here is to put the ball in play am the right position. You have to be in the right position.
We haven’t seen you for a while?
I have been cold for a while. I was on the Challenge Tour last year, where I won three times but coming back out on the European Tour can be tough ad I have to be a little more patient. The more you play out here though, the more experience you gain. That is very true at this golf course as well – I think you have to have played at least five rounds here to know where you want to go.

What happened on the fifth?
That was a nice hole in one I have to say. I hit an eight iron and got a little lucky with the bounce on the right side of the green. You can see it on TV that it bounces on the right side of the green and then kicks towards the hole. Sometimes good things happen…
You don’t ride a motorcycle?
I don’t but maybe I will try it now, It looks like fun so why not?
How many hole in one in your career?
I don’t know, maybe five or six. But it was nice to have two eagles in the round and shoot 67, especially as I haven’t been playing with a lot of confidence recently. And you need to have a little confidence to get round here. But I managed to do it today, and got a little lucky with two eagles but I hit a lot of good shots out there today and enjoyed it.
Confidence?
That’s golf. I don’t know. I have been on tour for 20 years now. It’s up and down. That’s the way it is. But it can all change in one week. It can come together and all of a sudden you can win. That’s part of the reason why I came here even though I had no confidence. You have to focus on the target and line when you play this course because you have no choice. I am very happy with the way I played and the score today so let’s see what happens for the rest of the week.
Jeunghun Wang (Usa) – First Round 67 (-5)
I hit it very well and played really good. I played here before so I know the course and that’s why I played well today.
The tee shots are very important here. I focussed on my tee shots on every hole. That’s the key to a good score. I’m happy I didn’t have any bogeys. I hope I can go on without making any bogeys this week.
I’m playing well so I hope to continue. I try my best to win every week. I don’t have a driver in my bag this week.
S.S.P. Chawrasia (Ind) - First Round 67 (-5)
It was a good start to the tournament. Now, it’s important to build on that for the next three days. Today my putting was good and I made some good recoveries.
I also had a chip-in on the second hole from just over then green from 15-18 feet.
My driving overall was decent except on the 16th when I pulled to the left and went into the bushes.  I tried to chip out but couldn’t make the up and down from just 10-12 feet.
If I had not had made a double bogey on the 16th (my seventh hole) it could have been but its still alright. I will take a fie-under for a start. Of course, it will always be nice to have a couple of more birdies, but you can’t have them all.
I did not make my driver to the course and I had decent sized putts, so overall happy with the day.

It was quite an up-and-down day, and I hit a lot of 4-Irons, but coming in I had a good stretch.
Starting out on the 10th, I had a bogey on 11th and then again on 17th. I missed makeable putts on 11th and 13th and then coming back I misjudged a chip on third and went into the bunker on the fourth. I also had a couple of bad lies.
I was very inconsistent with my iron play to start with. Then I broke it down and tried to focus on the routine and it worked. I was a bit wayward in the last couple of weeks in US, so when I came back I worked my coach, Vijay Divecha on it. It helps to have someone who knows your game well and sets it right and in good time.
But after that I putted solidly after that and coming down the final stretch from sixth to ninth, it was nice to roll a few (birdies).
Walking down after the fourth, I told my caddie I haven’t played badly but I was five or six behind and the guys up there had made a fast start. The key was to stay in touch somehow. You don’t want to go too far behind, so I needed to gain some ground and stay in touch.
I think it was on the walk from the fifth green to the sixth that I tried to clear my head and then it worked well.
On the last few holes I also made some good putts from 12 to feet. The putt that I missed from five feet on 11th was something I did not trust. But in the second half I just let the green take the ball.
Padraig Harrington (Irl) – First Round 71 (-1)
Reflect on the first round?
I enjoyed it. It is a great course because it puts you under pressure all the way through. It is a good test of golf.
Tough playing alongside guys who have played here before?
I created more problems on the greens. I could see at times I was a bit aggressive on a few tee boxes and got away with that. I might need to be a little bit more conservative for the next few rounds.
But this is still a good foundation for the week?
I played better than my score especially early in my round. Finishing with a bogey isn’t a great thing. I would have been happier if I was three or four-under. That’s where I felt I should have been. That’s the game. We have another 54 holes to go so it is steady start but nothing too spectacular.
