S.S.P. Chawrasia (Ind) – Second Round 67 (-5), Total 139 (-5)
You must be pleased?
Today, I shot five under and I’m very happy. First day I was level par as I was a little bit scared as it’s a new course and it’s very tricky. Overall I played good today.
What clicked?
My hitting was really good and some putts dropped, that’s why I made five under.
This is no doubt a difficult course. It’s tougher than Delhi GC, so I just focused on hitting it straight.

How did that feel?
I feel really good, and made a few putts. That’s why I shot five under. Yesterday I played good but missed a few putts. I did miss a few but I made a few too, so they equal out.
Do you feel you know the course a bit better now as the week goes on?
I’m getting used to it but I’m still learning. Two more days and I’ll try to keep learning how to play this.
Confident?
I won’t change anything. I’ll keep the same strategy. Hit it straight and putt well (laughter). Very simple.
Does it mean you’ll keep it safe?
This course is very tricky and you’ve got to be straight all the time. The greens are tough. All the time, you need full concentration on every single shot. I can’t remember how many fairways or greens I hit.
Was the course any easier today?
It’s not playing easy. Yesterday was a bit windy and today was a bit less wind, so maybe it was a bit easier.
Long putts on five and eight?
My putter was going good today. I made a couple of putts. A great putt on five and eight, they were tough putts. On five, it was from about 25 feet and on eight, it was around 20 feet. Both were long putts.
Miss on nine?
I hit a good putt. It just missed (from two feet).
Were you thinking of the hooter as it was getting cloudy?
I didn’t see it was getting cloudy as I was too much focusing on the putt. After the round finished, I said “oh, it’s getting dark now”.
Does it feel good to be bogey free?
Oh yeah, this course, if you play bogey free, it’s really challenging. I feel really great to play a bogey-free round.
Were the greens softer?
It was hard and fast. Maybe after the rain, it’ll be slow.
Do you feel confident of retaining your title?
Last year I won, so I have lots of positivity. And now I’m leading so obviously I’m confident and I’m trying to win this tournament again. Hopefully I’ll play good the next two days.
Nice to get a lie-in for the third round tomorrow?
Today I woke up at 4am, so I have to take a rest.
Why do you always play well in India?
Even when I’m playing outside of India, I’m playing good (laughter). I’ve played many times here and I’m used to many of the courses, except for this week. This course is totally new. Maybe it’s home and I have confidence.
Why are players struggling on the course?
It’s very narrow and there’re lots of water hazards. The greens are very trick with a lot of slopes. That’s why it’s very tough.

It was a long day out there, tough going?
Towards the end it was a little bit. I was getting a bit tired, I didn’t sleep very well last night. It was an early start, up at half past four this morning. But I played quite nicely. A little bit disappointed with the finish, I left a few putts out there on the back nine. But still, I’m only one behind just now, that’s not a bad position going into the weekend.
Not much sleep, was it nerves?
No, no just a few noises going on that I couldn’t put out of my mind. It was just one of those nights, unfortunately.
A double-bogey at five. Is it the hardest hole on the course?
It’s tough, yeah. It’s a long, island green. It was about 170 today, but I hit it in the bunker and three-putted. Then I four-putted eight and missed a short one on nine, so I’ve wasted three or four shots there on the greens.
Good news, you’re only one shot off the lead as it stands. What do you need to do tomorrow?
Yeah, I need to keep playing like I have been and just putt a bit better. It will be interesting to see how far behind I am come the end of round two. But, just more of the same really.

It was a long day out there, tough going?
Yeah it’s a very tough golf course. You are under pressure in every single shot, so you have to play the shot 100%. The two shots I really missed today cost me two double-bogies because I hit two balls into the water. You have to keep fighting here. We’ll see what is going to happen at the weekend.
You were going along well and then the winds came up, did that affect you?
It was windy in the first nine also and I played one under, pretty good. Then I make another birdie and miss a shot on hole number five, I hit it in the water. Then on hole number eight, the same. It’s still a good round, 73 is not bad, and we’ll see what happens the next two days.
You mentioned hole five, it seems to be one of the toughest on the course.
Yes, especially against the wind. It’s a really tough tee shot. If you don’t hit it perfectly the ball will go into the water. You have to focus and hit a really good shot there.
Good news, you’re still only four shots back at this point. What do you do tomorrow?
Just try to play the way I am playing. You know when you have to be aggressive on this course and you know when you have to play safe. It’s going to be really important not to make three putts because these greens are very big and sloped. I think that will be the key
