July 10: As the Asian Tour season hits the halfway mark, we take stock of what has happened thus far and highlight some of the potential stars who are expected to shine when the season gets underway again in September.
This week, we check out Thailand’s Arnond Vongvanij.
His season so far: Deemed as the next rising star from Thailand, Arnond continued to display his prominence on the Asian Tour following an encouraging 2013 season where he finished 24th on the final Order of Merit, courtesy of three top-10 finishes.
The highly-rated Thai enjoyed a swinging start to the 2014 season when he finished tied-12th at the SAIL-SBI Open in India. He kept up with his consistency for the next four tournaments before missing his first cut in six starts at the Queen’s Cup on home soil just before the break.
Arnond finished tied-second at the ICTSI Philippine Open where he was narrowly edged out by Australia’s Marcus Both by two shots.
He is currently ranked 12th on the Order of Merit led by Anirban Lahiri of India.
What can we expect from Arnond: Arnond has shown that he has the ability to contend on the Asian Tour. He enjoyed a great rookie season in 2012 where he secured his maiden victory at the King’s Cup.
At the age of 25, Arnond’s game has matured beyond his years, both mentally and physically. “Experience matters,” he said.
Arnond will be taking advantage of the break to work on his game and return with all guns blazing when the season resumes.
