Gaganjeet Bhullar (Ind) – First Round 64 (-7)
I played really good. It was a bogey free round. It always feels good when you stay away from bogeys. I had a great back nine which was the golf course front nine. I think I drove the ball really good and kept everything in play.
I think my putting was the reason why I shot a 64. In fact, I didn’t have many longs putts out there today. I hope to continue this streak in the next three days.
The way I’ve been striking the ball from tee number one, I knew I could go low because my striking was right up there. Once my putts started falling, that’s when I went really low. I got into a really good stretch from hole number four to eight. I birdied five in a row and that was one of the reasons to my 64.
Royal Melbourne have one of the fastest greens that I’ve ever played. It took me a while to adjust to the greens here. Asia is our home so we know what the green speed is like. I think it was a really good experience and hopefully it will help me down the line in other Major tournaments.
(On how he recovered from finishing 60th at the World Cup of Golf last week) Mentally I know that I always try to win every tournament I play in. I didn’t play bad at all last week. It was just a matter of a few bad bounces. I kept telling myself that I’m right up there and I wasn’t upset with my performance because I was hitting the ball good. It is only a matter of time before my short game improved and it happened today.
Nicholas Fung (Mas) – First Round 66 (-5)
It was a very good round because I started so well. I wanted to shoot even-par on the back nine but instead I did well there. The front nine is much easier compared to the back nine.
The last few holes especially 15 and 18 are tough. I’m surprised I birdied 15.
I have a lot of confidence coming into this week after winning in Malaysia last week. I’m hitting the ball so well but only my putting has let me down. That wasn’t the case today as my short iron and my putting pulled my game up.
The par three 15th hole was my best birdie. I hit my four-iron which landed short of the flag but I made my birdie putt from 20-feet.
MO Joong-kyung (Kor) – First Round 66 (-5)
My round was good. I played like how I wanted to. This is not an easy course. It’s a pretty tough course. If the wind blows hard like how it is now, then it would be really tough. It wasn’t as windy when I played in the morning. I am playing in the afternoon tomorrow. I am sure we will get the wind so we will see how it goes. I’m hoping for a good finish this week so that I can keep my card for next year. I’m currently 56th right now. Well, it’s everyone’s goal every year. I will just do my best and we will see how it goes. It’s good to see a few young players up on the leaderboard right now. It doesn’t really matter to me if I can keep up with them. I don’t think age matters in this game of golf. You just got to play your own game well.
Jazz JANEWATTANANOND (Tha) – First Round 66 (-5)
I think I played very consistently today. Playing in the same group as Gaganjeet helped me because he motivated me to play well. He’s playing so good and made almost every putt. Finishing top five in Manila two weeks ago gave me a lot of confidence coming to this week. The course is kind of long for me and the greens are tough to read. I need to hit my long irons good and make as many putts as I can.
Anthony KANG (Usa) – First Round 66 (-5)
I find the course very difficult but I’m very happy with my round today. There are a few holes out here that you can make big numbers. I just try my best to stay away from making big numbers. Fortunately, I managed to do it today. I was able to hit the fairways and the greens most of the time.
I’ve been hitting the ball well. There have been a few hits and misses but overall, my game is in shape. I’ve made five consecutive cuts already. Hopefully I can continue to play well this week. I’m having better control of my golf clubs now.
Shaaban HUSSIN (Mas) – First Round 66 (-5)
I’m very pleased with my round today. I’m hitting the ball good and my putting is working for me as well. I think I played fantastic today. We were lucky as well because we didn’t get much wind in the morning. It was kind of easy to score today.
I’ve been playing consistently and I am in a pretty good form coming into this week. I finished fifth on my local tour last week. That boosted my confidence in my game. Hopefully I can do better this week.
Rory HIE (Ina) – First Round 68 (-3)
It was a solid round today. It was fun playing with Daniel (Chopra) and Shiv (Kapur). They are both very good players. We were all playing very well. The course is in a really good condition out there.
There are obviously more pressure on me this week but I think that helps me to play well as compared to any other week. I was really happy with my eagle on 16. I hit a really good shot. The ball looked like was getting close to the hole.
We couldn’t really tell because there are a lot of humps. We walked up to the pin and couldn’t find the ball. Then we figured out that the ball had gone into the hole. That was pretty amazing.
