June 19: U.S. Open debutants Masahiro Kawamura of Japan and Cameron Smith of Australia battled through tough scoring conditions to return with an even-par 70 on Thursday.
Kawamura, a winner on the Asian Tour, was unlucky not to join the 25 players in the red numbers when he bogeyed the 14th hole to share 26th place at Chambers Bay.
Smith, who finished an impressive fifth on the Asian Tour Order of Merit in his debut season last year, was three-over through 13 holes but he fought back with three birdies on holes 14, 15 and 18.
Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, a three-time Asian Tour number one, was a further shot back alongside Marcus Fraser of Australia, who returned on matching 71s in the year’s second Major tournament.
Shiv Kapur of India was placed tied 52nd following a 72 while Liang Wen-chong of China, Seukhyun Baek of Korea and Anirban Lahiri of India posted a 73, 74 and 75 respectively.
Ends.
