March 26: Thai star Kiradech Aphibarnrat came agonisingly close to a place in the Round of 16 at the WGC-Dell Match Play on Friday after he lost in a play-off to American Dustin Johnson.
The 2013 Asian Tour number one earlier notched his second victory with a 1-up win over American Robert Streb to set up a showdown with Johnson, who also secured his second win with a 2 & 1 victory over Jimmy Walker.
In the first play-off hole, Johnson made birdie against Kiradech’s par to advance into the knock-out stage at Austin Country Club.
Thongchai Jaidee settled for a halve point in his match against Graeme McDowell which proved insignificant in the group as world number two Jason Day secured his third win in as many matches against Paul Casey to move into the knock-out stage.
India’s Anirban Lahiri, last year’s Asian Tour number one, posted a comfortable 4 & 2 victory over Fabian Gomez after losing one and halving another match earlier.
Current Order of Merit leader Marcus Fraser lost to Germany’s Martin Kaymer 4 & 3.
