Sentosa, Singapore, November 2: Thai star Kiradech Aphibarnrat enjoyed a third place finish at the Turkish Airlines Open on Sunday, finishing two shots behind champion Victor Dubuisson of France.
The grip it-and-rip it Asian Tour standout was in the thick of the final day action in the last group out and signed off the week with a five-under-par 67 and 20-under-par 268 total. He turned in 31 and then birdied the 10th hole to signal his intent to win a third European Tour title this season but could only par home from there.
Kiradech, who has finished top-six in his previous three starts, came agonisingly close on the par five 18th hole when his chip hit the pin for eagle and the ball stayed out. He then missed his birdie attempt.
“I was doing great with a very good start. But at the end, I just can't make birdies. Hit many good shots ... all the par threes were at the flag but I just can't roll the ball in,” said the 26-year-old former Asian Tour number one.
He opened the final day with four straight birdies and added two more around the turn but the birdies dried up after that.
“The way I'm playing is a good start, on fire, and then in the middle of the game, I slowed down a bit and to have one birdie on the back, that's not good enough to get the job done. It's going to take me awhile to forget the last putt,” said Kiradech, who is expected to break into the world’s top-40 with his strong finish.
Reigning Asian Tour number one David Lipsky of the United States finished tied 20th on 279 while Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand finished on 281 in what is the first leg of the Race to Dubai’s Final Series, which now heads to the WGC-HSBC Champions in China which Kiradech will also be in the field.
