Abu Dhabi, January 19: Thai star Kiradech Aphibarnrat got off to a flying start at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship by signing for a flawless six-under-par 66 to trail leader Henrik Stenson of Sweden by one shot on Thursday.
The 27-year-old Thai, Asia’s number one in 2013, highlighted his round with six birdies, including four in-a-row from the first, to sit in second place alongside Martin Kaymer of Germany, England’s Oliver Fisher and Marc Warren of Scotland at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
India’s S.S.P. Chawrasia, Jeunghun Wang of Korea and American David Lipsky were among those bunched in 10th place following matching 68s. Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg and Australian Sam Brazel were seven shots off the pace in tied-52nd position.
Korea’s Soomin Lee and reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit champion Scott Hend of Australia returned with identical 75s.
